This is the best camp site I have ever been to. I have been going there for almost 30 years I started going when I was 18 years old. I brought my father with me when I was in my late 20s and then a few years after that I started bringing my son when he was 5 years old. My father even brought my mother once, but they stayed in a motel in a local town. This is actually a multipurpose land, but it is still the best for camping that I've ever been too all the same. There are multiple places to camp (although the best one you can camp at you can no longer drive down to, and is to far to hump your gear on foot). The crowds are hit or miss on the two major camping holidays, Labor Day & Memorial Day. Sometimes it's dead and you have the entire place to yourself, and sometimes your have to camp in the shooting pit. The rangers are pretty cool you just have to remember to follow the rules and they won't gone you a hard time. There are no facilities any where on the property so bring a shovel and some TP. There is a supermarket and a great dinner 5 minutes down the road. If you forget anything you can always run down to the store and pick it up, and you can always get breakfast if you don't want to cook it. I recommend this site to anyone who is interested in having a good time and creating memories to last...
Read moreWe came here for camping. This place doesn't have any amenity, so you need to prepare for your cocking & toilet. Such a beautiful and great place. we had a great three days with fishing (small large mouth base, blue gill, and crappies), kayaking, and hiking. The pond is spring fed but there are so many fallen trees and leaves in the pond causing tannins. I believe water is clean though since we saw so many salamanders.
Unfortunately we saw many trash and toilet papers on the ground, and smelled bad. especially they were left near campsite. I hope each person takes care of their stuff (toilet, food, and detergent.) We dug a hole to make a compost toilet with saw dust which worked great as well as make shift...
Read moreHickok Brook is a little visited and lightly maintained piece of NYS land that happens to be near me. The trails are somewhat overgrown and poorly marked, but fairly level and easy. The roads are rutted. There is a scenic pond, though it's not suitable for swimming. There are no viewpoints, waterfalls or other major attractions. The place has no amenities at all: no toilets, water, power or cell service. So come prepared. On the positive side, it offers free campsites, including several on the pond. Nearby Tusten Mountain is a better place for a vigorous hike, and Minisink Battleground Park, which has more amenities for an easy hike...
