Arrived on a cheerfully sunny day. Began at the top of the trails and descended to the beachfront. Once there the weather turned and it began pouring. Narrowly escaped the torrential downpour without being sucked into the water. The rain slicked the slopes of the bluff and the sand and walking path of the shoreline rapidly turned to thick sticky mud as the waves crashed to our feet, ankles, and knees at the shore. If you’re aware of ANY possibility of rain do NOT walk the beachfront. My friends and I fought to escape the fate of becoming a tragic news headline. Climbing dwindling slopes, navigating holes, and scaling collapsed trees as the pathway was useless and overwhelmed with water. We were the only ones stupid enough to be down there at the time. Do not take the risk. Please use caution when warranted. Stick to the hiking paths and watch the beach from afar. During the sun it was pleasant and appeared to be a popular destination. 4 stars as it’s not the property’s fault we stupidly decided to walk the shore line of an eroding shore and the rain did clear in about an hour. It is beautiful in safe conditions. But please do not be so callous as to put yourself in such a dangerous situation. We escaped but mentally have unlocked a new and profound fear. If the view of the sky is like the first picture then go enjoy the water. If that view starts changing to the second picture it’s time to turn around and start the trek...
Read moreI first went to Chimney Bluffs 5 years ago, and it was my favorite spot in the region, with wonderful hiking and spectacular views. After not having been there for the past few years we took another family there on Saturday with great expectations. It was a miserable disappointment. First, the bluff trail detour was 45 minutes of almost impassable, deep mud, everywhere. Then when we finally got to the Bluffs, and took the left bluff trail back towards the parking area, we found the trail increasingly badly eroded, so treacherous at one point that we felt lucky just to have escaped without any serious falls. Only when we got to the end of it, at the parking lot, was there a ‘trail closed’ sign (there was no such sign on the other end, where we picked it up at the end of the detour trail we were told to take). What was once a beautiful experience was a truly unpleasant and dangerous couple of hours. I would highly recommend avoiding this park until it is properly overhauled with decent and...
Read moreThis place is heavenly. It's a crime to be so underrated despite the unparalleled natural beauty. I'd really like to know why this place is not so popular. C'mon people, you can do better, just visit this place already! The bluff area has rock formations which will remind you of the desert area of great american west. Add the greanish blue backdrop of the huge Ontario lake, the natural beauty is simply hard to beat. Yet, there wasn't much of a crowd. Social media too isn't abuzz with photos or blogs about this place. There are 2 entrances to this place and only a handful of trails. Each trail covers a significant portion of the bluff area rock formations because that area is the usp of this state park. The second entrance leads you to the parking lot from where you could directly land on the Ontario shore. From there you could look up and enjoy the bluff rock formations from the bottom as opposed to the other trails where you get a top view of. Do check...
