Our leisurely paddle on still water was rewarded almost immediately with sightings of otters, bitterns, bald eagles, herons, turtles, eastern kingbirds, swallows, red wing blackbirds, water lillies, primroses, elderberries, and dozens of rarer birds. Lots of optional paddle routes and a quiet approach to Canandaigua Lake. Easy in-and-out at the state ramp on 245 due to the floating kayak/canoe ramp. Outhouse smell filled the parking area, however. I suspect that it was being frequented by nearby construction workers, as route 245 was undergoing bridge and road repairs at the time (June '18). 85° + temps may have contributed, but more attention to treating it...
Read moreHike was very steep, and the trail I took (which seemed to be the main trail?) Did not have much of a view at the top. This made the hike fairly strenuous without out too much payout. Did I still enjoy it? Of course! They are dog friendly, though trails do get very thin in places and passing other dogs can get risky (especially when passing owner proclaimed "friendly" dogs) The steep trail has many loose rocks which definitely does not help with maintaining...

There are a lot of ponds which attract lots of water birds. I never get tired of it. Conklins Gully is a "must see". It's fun weaving the trails together to make for as long or as short of a hike you want to take. There is a lot of diversity ,too, steep climbs, undulating walks, flat walks, marshes, woods,...
