I am not editing the original post because it all holds true, but adding to it. I visited again last week, and again outstanding reds and whites. Yates is best described as a boutique wine maker that does it for the love of the craft, the nose on the Estate Red is so delightful, I sniff 2 or 3 times before every sip, and the complexity lets you sip and savor, as opposed to "drinking" a glass of wine, the special estate red is equally elegant. Don't tell him, but if he doubled his prices, it would still be a bargain. This is IMHO one of the 2 best wineries in the finger lakes and I have visited 50-60 places. The following is the original post: For the last 8 years in November, I have rented a 30+ passenger limo and taken a bunch of friends that all enjoy wine to do a pre-winter stock up. of wines.
We try to find the unique places not necessarily the big places. We included Yates cellars based on their large selection of wines, our group is about 50-50 as far as sweet/dry. Good choice, the group collectivity left with probably 4-6 cases of wine. The most of the 6 wineries we visited that day!
This is not a fancy retail outlet offering lighted glasses and wall art, they did have tee shirts for sale. It is located in a 1800's home, and manned by the owner and some help, who obviously just enjoy the art of wine making.
They offered a choice of 10 tastings from their 20-25 offerings, so if you can't find something you like, you don't like wine. Most of the offerings are very mature 3 -5 year old vintages, Reds and whites were both well crafted and enjoyable.
A poll that I do each year of the group, they said Yates cellars was the #1 favorite on this years trip.
Good job and thanks for...
Read moreThey have an excellent selection of wine, including many you don't see often (they have 2 different albariños- my personal favourite, and they had several wines I have never heard of. I've been to somewhere between 200 and 300 wineries over the years and have never seen some of the ones they have available). During my tasting, I had a great conversation with the owner's grandson about the wine, the beautiful old house and the property. He was so friendly and welcoming. Afterwards, I enjoyed a glass on their wrap around porch. It's very peaceful outside. The railing to the entryway is covered in grapevines, so it feels like you're walking through the vineyard on your way in. I highly recommend stopping in and experiencing...
Read moreYates Cellars was a great stop on our trip to Keuka Lake. Although it was not initially on our list of stops, I was certainly happy we decided on it. The wines were great and the gentleman doing the tasting was very knowledgeable and helpful. Bonus for being one of the only wineries in the area doing a wine with La Cross grapes and having an awesome winery cat come visit during the tasting. We left with a case of various wines and will definitely swing by there again if...
