Cascade was my 1st High Peak experience and honestly I underestimated her endurance, ability for agility and stress to strength tolerance.
I had four major moments, the first happening within the first ten minutes. I was sweating, breathing heavily and feeling out of breathe but it soon subsided and I was able to catch my stride.
At a whopping 4098 feet you can find yourself moving at an amazing pace with novice skills treading the path of climbing rocks or escorted by trails of prints left months ago.
I was able to find myself at the crossing where we stopped to take in the view and I was looking for the fastest way back down without my team noticing my physical presence missing. When you’re a rookie just don’t ever look up those rocks can be intimidating but you began with a purpose so find yourself there, in purpose. Bring a walking pole, novices look to your experienced friends.
When you reach the high peak there is nothing like it! Nothing! Nothing! Nothing! Peaks surrounding you in a panoramic 360 degree window of a view!
Cascade was my first, she was able to get more than I bargained for from me and for that I will be forever grateful.

Read moreThis hike was a bit challenging because we started hiking a little later than anticipated. A group coming down even asked us “if we were going up for the sunset “ lol. I didn’t start tracking it until maybe nearly a mile within the hike (around 4:15 pm). So I’d say it might have taken us about 4 hours from beginning to end, not fully sure tho. This is a rocky trail and due to the rain a few days prior, we came across a lot muddy spots as well, but we kept a pretty good pace with a few occasional water breaks.
We made it to the top of the mountain around 5:45 pm, with enough time to catch the sun getting ready to set. When we got up there, there was only two people there getting ready to head down. We had to rush back down because nightfall was near, so we didn’t get to enjoy it as much as we wanted to, but it was still a good workout.
It got dark maybe halfway down. Thank goodness we had a flashlight. Both me and my boyfriend fell (haha), different location, but still hilarious...good time. Definitely a great hike. I’ll hike up there again when the weather is warmer. The view from up there was...
Read moreI arrived on a rainy Friday morning at 0550 and had the best parking spot!!!!! (Don't forget your headlamp!)
For the most part the trail started to asend immediately. The trail was well protected from the rain and remained pretty dry (initially).
The split for Porter/Cascade was well marked. I hiked Porter first because it was not as good a view, and it was a longer segment than Cascade. The summit of Porter was super small and I passed it initially and got a .5 mile bonus hike in. It did get kinda sloppy muddy at the top. Still wasn't too bad to get through.
Cascade was so much fun to summit. It's a massive rock face. Make sure to follow the path!! It had amazing views! The top was windy and cold! (Was 41° at the bottom when I started).
I brought my dog and he had no problems during any point of the trail.
Definitely easier than I expected for my first two 46ers! Happy hiking!
