3 stars for the fact that the scenery is nice, I have an offroad place to bike, and I'm generous with my ratings. I would give 4 stars for just the section parallelling 10, but once the trail starts to parallell 23 and you're signifigantly past Stamford, the maintenance on this trail gradually decends to some of the worst maintenance I've ever seen. Ruts all over the place and sections that get less use (especially Grand Gorge to Roxbury) have tall grass as the surface. Railroad depots are both abandoned (even the one that's supposed to be open in Stamford), and the things for feedback are not in any of the things where they are supposed to be. This honestly feels like a rail-trail project that was abandoned at some point in the last decade. Hope someone looks at the Panhandle Trail in Pennsylvania for ideas of restoration...
Read moreGreat spot for a quicker gravel ride, 95% can be done with a cross bike. There are a few spots where the gravel and mud are bad enough to need a 40c tire for quicker, safer travel. Some nice things to see along the way. Once you hit the spot on the edge of Grand Gorge where there's no sign the trail that runs through GG is very mucky. Coming out the other side onto rt30 across from the tire shop it seems like the trail moves on but it wasn't really rideable. Railroad ties were still in place and above the surface while the mud in between was muddy. You could head out on rt30 and catch it elsewhere in better shape. Dropping down into GG will get you some nice food and rest stops . Stamford also has places to stop and there are benches...
