I have no idea how Letchworth Campground has earned a 5 Star Rating? Although a gorgeous state park, if you're seeking peace & quiet in your 'camping experience', then this is NOT your happy place! It is a huge park, it's 14,427-acres and 17 miles long, but the layout of the campground is horrid with campsites jammed together. The designated dog loops make it worse. We drove 3 hours, debated what to do for 5 minutes, turned around and drove 3 hours home. I don't know why they would pack everyone so close together? It's not 'beach/water front' sites where every square foot is priceless. To make matters worse, because they have designated dog areas, those sites are absolutely packed with dogs and there was a lot of barking and tension. It sounded like when you enter a dog shelter. Yes, we have a rescue dog and we've camped many NYS State Parks, no problem. Park management has plenty of options with so much space; they could/should get rid of every other site and expand the number of loops, they could offer 'premium' (more spacious sites) for a much higher fee for people seeking solitude, or they could offer off-grid sites with no amenities or hook-ups and it wouldn't cost a bundle to develop. Until then, if you're seeking peace & quiet, hike Letchworth's gorgeous trails, but find an alternate campground and save yourself a lot of...
Read moreNow I see why this is the most popular state park in New York. Absolutely stunning views, great sites, new bathrooms, and helpful staff - everything you're looking for in a camping experience.
We stayed in Loop Number 7, which had a newer bath house. All of the sites were fairly large, but most had a lot of trees and a lot of shade. All of the sites were also very flat and had plenty of room. The back-inn's were very easy, and the power hookups were very accessible.
The store had a lot of stuff that you could buy and the prices were decent. An awesome playground was near our Loop that the kids loved with some very cool musical instruments and a great climbing web. The loops are small enough that there isn't a ton of traffic on the roads. And there are seven loops in total (at least) . Not all have new bath houses and not all are pet friendly.
The park itself is absolutely stunning with some amazing views of the river the waterfalls, and of course the iconic train bridge. The hikes are fairly easy we didn't find anything that was too demanding. However I would doubt if it's actually 128 steps to the bottom of the staircase at the small falls I think it was more like a hundred and thirty-five but who's counting.
It's easy to see why this place is booked very far in advance. I can't wait...
Read moreMy family camped and hiked at Letchworth State Park for a 3 day weekend. As the site is known for, the "Grand Canyon of the East" was spectacular. The trails were well marked and easy to follow. The views were awe inspiring and the wildlife abundant. That said, the campgrounds were aging and not well kept. Our campsite was littered with trash upon arrival. The bathrooms were in disrepair, but clean. Urinal flushes didn't work, soap dispensers were broken. Also, my family greatly appreciates the "strict" quiet times that the Park Police maintain at most parks we stay at, but we had obviously intoxicated partiers nearby who were loud WELL past midnight. I understand that people have fun in different ways, but everyone needs to have respect for others, and when they don't the police need to do rounds. Overall, Letchworth is beautiful, and VERY crowded. You will always get many types of people at popular parks. We will probably not be back, because we prefer quieter camping.
