It's incredible to me that this State Park gets the number of 5 stars that it gets. After reading many, it seems that the reviews are predicated primarily on everything besides the 63 campsites. If you are looking for a Campsite Review, this is going to be more for you. If you are looking for a review on the hiking trails, I can't give you one as everything is currently washed out and inaccessible.
The majority of "Camp Sites" are not private. It's more akin to a parking lot in the middle of a hay field. The sites in loop c where I am are so close together, it really IS akin to a parking lot. If you happen to book WELL in advance, you might get one of the 10 campsites with electric. These are a bit better in the sense that the sites are at least spaced apart a bit. But they're still out in the open. If you're looking to get into the woods where you camp, don't come to Fillmore Glen State Park. If you're looking for a Camp Ground where the primary attraction is the hiking trails, Fillmore may be for you. But the actual Camping Experience is frankly awful. Want some privacy at your campsite? Some Shade? Tough luck. Want a quite campsite where children aren't running all over the place 5 feet from your RV? Tough Luck.
Purely in terms of the camping experience, Fillmore Glen State Park is one of THEE WORST State Parks I have yet been to. To be honest, I wasn't aware that any NYS Camp Ground was this tiny and uninspiring. Fillmore Glen State Park Campground is more just a place to park, to be, while you're off hiking. This Is the first and last time I will park my RV...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe had a great time RV camping here over Memorial Day weekend. I had never been here before. Neat little park. All of the staff we encountered was SUPER friendly and helpful, too. The trails were very nice - I had heard rumors some of the trails were closed and was looking everywhere for info on it. What it is (or was the weekend we were there, and I think this is what people have been talking about for awhile) is that ONE section of the Gorge Trail is closed. Between bridges 7 and 8. You can hike up to and including bridge 7 and can come down from the top to and including bridge 8. But just that one section unavailable. Was still lots of nice hikes and the shade is perfect!
The swimming area wasn't dammed up yet on Memorial Day weekend, but there were also signs out that there was no admission charge that weekend, which was a nice surprise for our visitors!
We had a nice electric site we had reserved over the winter - the sites are nice but I will say that most of the sites on our side of the "road" were full open sun with no shade at all. We were huddles under the shade of the huge RV next to us from early afternoon on, lol! But I'd say about half of the electric sites had at least some trees and shade available.
We enjoyed checking out the old cemetery up above the park, and having a Dunkin Donuts, Subway and convenience store a 5 minute walk away was admittedly nice! We'll be back to stay in the future - in one of the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe Filmore Glen is one of our greatest local attractions. A wonderful set of trails with stops near many waterfalls. I think the craftsmanship of the trails themselves is one of the great assets the park has. Stone work and masonry laid by poor American workers in a CCC camp. The amount of actual work that went into this place is amazing. The skill and tenacity of the craftsman can be seen from beginning to end. Although, in the past twenty years or so, things have been going down hill. With less funding and less interest from the public the park has suffered. Weathered and in disrepair I myself had feared the worse for this NY landmark. In the past few years the park has received a few very generous grants and funding. A huge new playground and much work have brought it back closer to its former greatness. With another several million dollar grant given this past summer to spruce up the main Pavilion and other various projects. This little gem should be shiny and new in no time. I was raised in this park. I've fallen in love and been married in this park. I've watched my kids grow up in this park. A true natural beauty overlooked...
