Stayed at the park over the Fourth of July weekend. I chose spot 25 which is the furthest away from the expressway (the closest spot I would say is spot 70), but close to the entrance of the campground. The park itself is beautiful with lots of trees and stone formations, but I spent more time in the campground area. Once you enter the campground there is dumpsters at the entrance for convenience. Driving direction is one-way, but beware because a lot of the people will go in the opposite direction, so if you have little ones be mindful! Spot 25 was wonderful, there were a lot of trees and very low noise coming from the expressway, I barely heard it to be honest. When I walked the campground toward the expressway, it was very loud hearing the vehicles rushing by. I didn't use the shower facility, but the pit bathrooms closest to my spot south was very clean and did not smell (to me). Of the three state parks in the area, this one was the least crowded. I believe due to the fact that it does not have a lake, but I enjoyed that there were less people. I drove to the other state parks (Devil's lake and Mirror Lake) which were packed!
Spot 25 itself was a wonderful spot! Like I stated earlier, I did my research and saw that it was the farthest away from the road so there would be less noise. The pit toilets/water were about a 2 min walk from the spot to the south and the entrance was one spot over to the north. There were plenty of trees in between my spot and the other camps in between. It did rain over the weekend and the spot has a designated spot for tents with sand. The spot dried quickly after the rain and did not flood. I will be coming back to do a better walk of the...
Read moreWe made a huge mistake booking this campsite but we were on a cross country trip at the time and everything else around was booked. I have stayed at a ton of campgrounds, most great, some not so good, but this was by far the worst one I've ever stayed at. At least 5 large groups were playing music loudly (to try to block out the sound of the thruway I'm assuming), the guy behind us ran his loud generator all night and the people next to us had no idea how to use a headlamp and kept shining it in our tent. The fact that you have to pay the state park parking fee when camping is insane considering there's 1 short trail. This is a sad excuse for a state park and that's coming from someone who loves state parks usually. This is clearly not run well and no rules are enforced. It seems to attract large groups that just want to party and have no interest in nature, which makes sense as there is minimal nature to be found here. There was also a group that had several open flames directly under trees and shrubs to detract mosquitos but that's a huge fire hazard and I can honestly say I've never seen that amount of disregard for the environment. A...
Read moreInterstate 90 noise made this park a non-option for us. We had a tent site on the outer loop, site 75, and the noise from the interstate made this miserable. When we first got out of the vehicle, I was speechless. I couldn't believe that anyone would think this was a suitable option for camping, and frustrated that Wisconsin State Parks would offer this site. I could actually see headlights from the cars on the Interstate! We were having to shout to hear each other, making it difficult to set up camp or enjoy a meal outdoors. We had wanted to visit Devil's Lake and Mirror Lake, each of which were sold out for camping. We figured we could stay at nearby Rocky Arbor and make day trips to the other locations - however the highway noise was immediately a big problem, and after staying only a few hours, we decided to drive the 8 hrs home overnight, instead of trying to stay and sleep. I was able to call the next morning after 9 and get a refund for early checkout; the agent was friendly and helpful. The park looked beautiful, but I recommend its use be limited to day use for hiking or a picnic in...
