A lovely and beautiful place to visit in the Catskill Mountains, Hortus Arboretum is a very unique place. We bought plants and took a tour around the property. Two hours wasn’t quite enough, since we had a lovely picnic at their picnic tables while we were there. We will definitely return because we are plant lovers! The owners were very kind and chatted with us while we were there and answered questions that we had. All in all a wonderful place to visit.

This is a hidden gem, I will definitely visit again. The owners, a couple, were there to greet and answer all questions we had. This little arboretum had the most amazing collections. The ones, we loved the most were the magnolias. Some of these, I never knew of, i.e the big leaf magnolia. The leaves and flowers of this magnolia are enormous. I will definitely go back. I have the HV Living little free magazine for this little find.

Cool arboretum with a wide selection of flowers, edible plants, fitting fruiting plants and tubers. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Make sure to have plenty of bug spray as you walk around, it can get pretty buggy, and bring cash (small bills) exact change is usually needed.

In the latter days of COVID, Hortus Arboretum offered visits in 2 hours blocks on their online scheduling. Imagine having an entire Arboretum and Botanical Garden to stroll through without any noise except that of nature surrounding you! Meeting Allyson and Steve and witnessing their complete dedication to saving species for future generations was an eye opening experience. Their dedication to their mission and understanding that land is never owned, since it was tended for generations before any of us arrived by our Nation's Native Americans who respected all living is reflected in their work for generations to come. Take the time to see the work of these two visionary realists (that sounds like a contradiction).Go and learn of a greater purpose for gardening. They have accomplished so much on this plot of land that captures nature's intent of being forever in our midst. Our time there away from COVID was beautiful. The drive up those hills was the perfect beginning to 'seeing' their vision of saving species. There is a wonderful area for unpacking a lunch and feeling/smelling the surrounding beauty of the earth. Go. Ask questions. They are knowledgeable and ready to share that knowledge. To paw-paws and 'American Chestnuts' as well as the lowly plant that I love; the Syneilesis aconitifolia. Thank you both for providing tranquility and provoking deeper thinking about generational gardening. We hope to...

Took an incredible private tour of this varied, diverse, and inspirational garden. Allyson was overflowing with the horticultural wisdom of decades of passionate trial and error, and had a quirky personal anecdote about each and every plant.

Beyond the wealth of information, the tour is a rich sensory experience, with berries and fruits to taste, leaves to sniff and nibble, and all kinds of textures to touch, making it a rewarding experience for anyone and...
