Mohonk Preserve Spring Farm Trailhead parking — Attraction in Town of Marbletown

We visited Mohonk preserve - Bonticou crag Trail and climbed the notorious rock scramble.

We are a average hikers from NJ who started hiking just this year and covered almost all northern NJ trails like: stairway to heaven, palisades park- rock scrambles/giant stairs and Mt. Tammany. (To give a perspective).

But the Bonticou crag rock scramble is a different level. We felt this extremely difficult for our experience level. It’s not physically difficult but it’s scary due to open heights you climb up. Only couple of us attempted and completed successfully.

I came here with my gf not expecting or even knowing what a scramble was. I’m pretty athletic but she had not the right gear on and got pretty anxious during some of it . she Wass able to do it tho so it was ok in the end. Wouldn’t recommend for inexperienced unathletic people. But it’s a great challenge which according to reviews, some kids were able to do it. But I bet it’s kids who are used to climbing and are familiar with hiking already. Id bet most city folk Adults wouldn’t attempt this climb 😅 It was a surprise for me and my gf but it was so much fun. It’s sorta bikeable too. Decent amount of space to park and has a pit toilet in the lot. Very well maintained trails. Did the Bonticou Rock Scramble, great hike, beautiful views and the mountain laurels are just starting to open right now! Parking is included with your Mohonk Preserve pass! We were there on a weekday- almost going to rain and almost had the Vista to ourselves. I imagine on a weekend day it’s super crowded up there. Wear appropriate hiking shoes for the scramble and for up at the top.
