The Merrimac Preserve maintains several simple but well-maintained trails and parking areas for the hiker trying to avoid the crowds at Devil's Lake SP and Parfrey's Glen SNA, or the heights and views from Gibraltar Rock SNA. I particularly liked the 1-mile Observation Deck Trail. One of the trails is also the Merrimac Segment of the Ice Age Trail. For visitors with a GPS device that can accept Custom POI files, the POI Factory site has a free downloadable POI file of the parking areas and trailheads of the reserve that you may wish to check out and install to your GPS.

We visited on a warmer Sunday afternoon on an early November. We walked a 3 mile loop and only saw one other group. IT WAS 😍! What a quiet, clean, well-maintained, and very beautiful place! The walking trails are mostly flat, so easy walking with lots of opportunities to enjoy nature. Parking is also easy, FREE, and very close to the trailhead.

Need a good grippy boot to walk in the winter because trails are slippery! Liked that it was dog friendly and not crowded. Would probably like it more in the summer but I am guessing there will be a fair amount of tick activity. Loved all the boardwalks
