Fun little local museum to visit, mostly about the revolutionary war and the large fort that protected the area during the 1780-81 raids. There is a good short video they show you have gives you a good lay out of the fort. I recommend watching this before you go up the hill and see where the fort was. You get a really good view of the river and see how the fort dominated the area.
The museum itself is really packed with information, artifacts and a really extensive bookstore. We also loved the not-to-scale version of the three Storey block house that we learned was actually a parade float originally designed by high schoolers.
I really hope they get the funding to build a realistic replica of the blockhouse since that would be well worth visiting for...

The fort was renamed Fort Plain after Herkimer was killed at Oriskany and some folks in the valley felt (unfairly) that he was at fault for loosing the battle and getting a lot of local militiamen killed in the process. There is a very nice display of artefacts, pictures and maps in the museum that tell the story of the War in the area, as well as a great bookstore. You can walk to the site of the original fort and get a nice view over the...

Helped my friend and I plan our day to other sites such as Stone Arabia Battlefield and Church, Palatine Church, Fort Klock and other small "forts" along Rt 5. Amazing bookstore. A very knowledgeable and...
