I have been going to this forest for approximately 52 years. It is a beautiful forest. It used to be a couple of communities but the homeowners were required to sell their homes and move. Purchased thru eminent domain. It became the buffer zone for Stewert airport and still is. You can see remnants of the properties and their stuff. Its now a Forever wild State Forest. Over 6,000 acres. Comprised of forests, wetlands, ponds etc. It has a lot of wildlife including deer, turkey. rabbits. squirrels fisher and abundant bird life. Its a multi purpose area. You can walk. Jog and run on many types of trail including paved roads that are maintained to be safe. Hundreds of miles of woodland trails. Biking and horses and snowmobiles are permitted. (No ATV's). Hunting and fishing and trapping is permitted. During The Big Game Hunting season with shotgun. No rifles allowed. During this time . Only hunters with proper license and permits are allowed. Its a beautiful place. I would only add that I wish that the wooded trails especially but all trails. I wish they could be better maintained. We have lost a...

I happened to be nearby and decided to go on a run in this gorgeous forest. I’m listening to a Stephen King audiobook right now, and let me tell you: I do not recommend going on a solo expedition here while listening to something spooky. I covered about 10 miles and did not see another person, but I heard many loud, inexplicable cracks in the forest, as if something very large was trailing me. I even had the classic horror film experience of thrice arriving at the same impassable point in a trail, despite feeling certain I had taken a different path to try to escape. I was convinced I was about to become a final girl. Plus side, I did run very fast.

Forest: 10/10 Trail maintenance and marking: 6/10 Fearing for my...

Hunted at Stewart in the early eighties when it was a cooperative hunting area. Meaning you checked in and out daily. Today it is a state forest area. The area is multi use including hunting, hiking, biking etc. Very popular area. Hunting starts in october thru mid December which limits all other use. Many trails in the area. For hunting... Its old farm land and in most areas very very thick. Very different hunting from the open woods. Still a great place to enjoy...

Perfect for an intermediate mountain biker. Trails (for the most part) are well maintained and show up on Map my Ride and Google Maps. I say mostly because the trail from Ridge Road to the Great Swamp is completely overgrown with numerous trees blocking the trail making riding a pain (August 2024). Parking is plentiful during the week.

I really enjoyed my day hike here and to the point of many other reviews, yes, the trails are overgrown in spots. I truly enjoyed the serenity and tranquility as I literally came across no one else while taking a six mile hike here outside of the parking area. Can’t wait to try other trails in this great park.
