Our week-long family camping trip was a resounding success. Lake Harris is a beautiful and well-maintained campground off the beaten path in the heart of the Adirondacks. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, especially Virginia. It is a medium-sized, relatively quiet campground with spacious wooded sites, many with waterfront views. Only a handful of generators were heard during our week-long stay. The lake is tranquil, clean, warm, and filled with fish. We enjoyed fishing, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and row-boating. Our toddler loved splashing on the beach and catching minnows and tadpoles. We also saw lots of frogs, chipmunks, bats, ducks and ducklings, and a garter snake. We very much enjoyed the sunsets, as well as the constant cool breeze off the lake. The local general store has everything you need in a pinch and is reasonably priced. Reasonably priced firewood is available just outside the campground by the bridge. Just know that the closest large grocery store (Tops) is 27 miles away on a local road so make sure to stock up. We were lucky enough to get the very best site in the entire campground. Sorry, I am not telling you the site number! We had our very own private beach and a large flat campsite on high ground that was very secluded and set off the campground road. We fell in love with Lake Harris campground and will be coming back next year...
Read moreThis campground is absolutely awesome! The campsites are large; the firepits are likewise large and well-constructed, and they include cooking grates for convenience.
The bathrooms are clean and well-maintained; the showers are also clean and the hot water works.
Most (if not all) of the campsites are on the water. This place is absolutely gorgeous and the lake itself is great for fishing - it is full of bass, perch, and walleye.
This is an awesome place to get away from it all in the heart of the Adirondacks - while still being maybe 20 minutes from I87 and stores.
Additional bonus: this campground has full cell signal and 4g LTE (Verizon). So you can get away from it all without being out of reach.
Staff here are absolutely wonderful. The manager and caretaker are absolutely fantastic as are the rest of the staff; everyone is friendly and was a great experience from a customer service perspective.
Lake Harris is absolutely awesome. I had several awesome trips this summer and am looking forward to longer ones next year now that I know about it.
I don't just throw the word awesome around. Thank you for a great season DEC/Lake Harris!! See...
Read moreHere’s the deal. This is a campground for campers. Not glampers. Not RVers. Whilst many sites are suitable for parking an RV, if you expect electricity or other hookups to satisfy your “camping” needs, go somewhere else. Many of the residents are passing through hikers, hitting the high peaks. Many others are families.
The scenery is perhaps the best of the state camp grounds in the Adirondacks. The lake is gorgeous and the water front sites (of which there are many) are stunning in the early morning with the fog and loons.
The facilities are typical for state sites. The water may or may not be warm when you want to shower. Every once in a while an over zealous junior ranger thinks he’s god’s gift to the woods. But these are the same across every NYS camp site in the area.
In the dead of summer it may be warm in the day, but there’s tons of shade and almost always a good breeze. Humidity has never been an issue over 25 years of camping here. Bugs are usually not a problem, but that depends on the wetness of the year.
Highly recommend, but don’t go, save...
