I went to Mianus for the purpose of hiking this past Saturday, after my toddler woke up from her mid day nap. It took only 22 minutes from Downtown, Stamford to get to Bedford, NY. Not bad at all for a beautiful Gorge Preserve with multiple hiking trails. We started off on the Green Trail which followed the river, beautifully hidden, still, peaceful river. We then followed the Red Trail which was spaciously wooded with autumn's left behind dead leaves. My daughter started getting fussy and hungry so we took the easier Blue Trail back. The only downside is that the trails are (intentionally) narrow, which can create awkward situations when the park is crowded and you're trying to pass people going the opposite direction. The best time to visit is during the week. The weekend can be quite busy. I'd recommend starting with the green trail and transitioning to the red trail to get the best views of the river. Though it was technically closed for the season (we encountered one angry homeowner who threatened us that we might be shot for going on the trails...despite signs indicating that hunting was strictly forbidden at all times) when we went, many people were still on the trails with us.
