Great experience!!!
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (Ted) and his wife Eleanor Alexander Roosevelt built the house they called “Old Orchard” in 1937-1938 on four acres of land purchased from Ted’s mother in the Sagamore Hill apple orchard. The Georgian style home was designed to Ted and Eleanor Roosevelt’s satisfaction by their son-in-law, Baltimore architect William G. McMillan, Jr.
Formerly the residence of Theodore Roosevelt Jr, the home now serves as a visitor center and museum.
Museum is free to visit and the Old Orchard Museum is open Thursday-Sunday from 11:00am-4:00pm. Trails and grounds open daily.
After visiting the museum you can take a nice hike in sagamore Hill nature trail. Sagamore Hill's nature trail offers scenic views of Eel Creek, a tidal salt marsh creek and Cold Spring Harbor beach, making it a great way to spend a beautiful day.
Its variety of habitats - woodlands, open fields, beaches, and salt marshes - provided for a great deal of diversity in plant and...
Read moreGreat place. What would be a potential complaint? National Park which is an absolute an nearly essential service provided to us all by us all (maybe someone would complain if they were a wacky right-wing "libertarian" type who foolishly would try to claim that pooling our money for the public benefit is a negative). Slight rant over, but the grounds here alone are worth the price of admission (which is free, though that doesn't represent the value delivered). Great grounds, interesting and informative museum and the house tour (which I haven't done for many years) are all almost better than an amusement park, or a night out on the town. If in the area, don't miss it, unless you don't like things in general (I mean like anything, you see no point to life) then you should definitely visit. In fact, go out of your way...
Read moreA self guiding tour with objects from the life of Theodore Roosevelt. Very informative and interesting. I was very fortunate to see Theodore Roosevelt’s metal of Honor on a visit. The metal now is in Washington D.C.. If you a hiker there is a downward trail leading to a nature preserve with a nice bridge walk. Located behind this house. At trails end you will discover another reason why Theodore loved this location A beautiful shoreline with stunning views of Cold Spring Harbor. It is best to walk to the Old Orchard museum from the main house because it has limited parking. There is also a short movie on Theodore’s life. This museum is a great compliment to the Sagamore Hill National Park. It is very kid friendly. There are restrooms. And places to sit. A full immersion in Theodore...
