I hiked to Nuclear Lake via the Appalachian Trail, and honestly, it was one of the most peaceful hikes I’ve done in the Hudson Valley—despite the name and its strange history. The trail itself is well-maintained and moderately easy, with some gentle ups and downs. It’s about 5-6 miles roundtrip, depending on your start point.
The lake is beautiful—calm, remote, and surrounded by thick forest. It’s incredibly quiet out there, which gives the whole area a slightly eerie but calming vibe. Knowing the site’s past (a plutonium research accident in the 1970s) definitely adds a mysterious element, but there’s no sign of danger today. The government cleaned it up, and it’s been declared safe for decades.
