Really cool firetower, part of both the Tupper lake triad and the ADK firetower challenge. Easy hike (2 miles round trip) up the mountain to the tower and back, it's a little steep, I'd rate it the easy side of moderate compared to other hikes in the area. This tower is in great shape and has WINDOWS which I don't think many, if any, others have. It helps with the wind at the top. Great views especially of lakes. There is also a little cabin at the top, though it's not open. The firetower is open all year round! This hike is easy to get to in a normal car, no weird seasonal roads or anything, and the lot is plowed regularly. There is a privy at...
Read moreThe hike to the Mount Arab Fire Tower was one of our favorite fire tower experiences so far. The trail was moderately challenging yet enjoyable and straightforward. What we did not expect was such a great educational opportunity at the summit. There is a small but enlightening fire tower museum at the summit. The guide/host provides a great tour and narrative on the history of the fire tower and the times when it was actively occupied. FYI, kids get a certificate for the visit and their are a few items for sale that support the operation of the tower and the museum. Donations are also accepted but...
Read moreA 0.7 mile hike to the summit, Mt. Arab is a great, short, Adirondack hike. The trail is well marked and well maintained. We started our hike in the afternoon and took our time going up the trail, watching birds and identifying plants along the way. The fire tower at the top offers 360° views, and there are also small areas at the summit with benches for those with small children, dogs, or who do not want to venture up the metal steps of the fire tower. It could be hiked in as little as an hour, but if you have time, I recommend traveling at a slower pace to truly...
