Whether you're a resident of the local area or just passing through, Rib Mountain is for you.
It's nestled atop the highest point in the area, and offers skiing in the winter months, great walking trails suitable for those of all ages, and stunning views. I highly recommend going here in the summer or fall months as you can get the most stunning views.
There's single-day passes as well as annual passes offered which range anywhere from $13-38 depending on your age and whether or not the car has out of state plates. Bathrooms are available and there's benches scattered through the multiple color-coded trails to take a quick breather. Don't worry about getting lost as there's maps to follow along the paths.
Check out the fire tower along the way, it's one of the best views you can get and overlooks the entire area. You can see for miles! If you want to, there's also ski lift rides available for a small fee.
Check out Rib Mountain if you haven't already, and enjoy one of the most beautiful parks in all of...
Read moreWe went up to check out the ski hills in hopes that we'll be able to go skiing this winter. The chair lift was open for a small fee of $15 bucks ( purchase your ticket online in advance) so we were able to check out the top of the hill. The staff was really friendly I just wish there was someone there pushing the ski aspect and selling people on coming back in the winter for skiing, I'm assuming that's why they offered fall ski lift rides. I really couldn't tell what the hills were like... Seemed like too many trees and not much open hill space. Seemed like a lot of black diamond hills and not so many blue runs. Again, if there was someone there selling the skiing we may have gotten a better idea on if we would return for skiing this winter. It's a 4 hour drive from Chicago so I'm not sure if it would be any better than going to Chestnut Mountain where they have a hotel right on the hill as well as restaurant and bar. Granite peak has hotels and restaurants in the area but you would need to pack up your...
Read moreBeautiful state park with lots of hiking trails and picnic areas on top of the mountain. This park has one of the few observation towers you can climb at a state park in the area. The observation tower is at the top of the mountain and so has great views of the surrounding towns and Countryside. The hiking trails very in difficulty but one thing to note is that since the park starts at the top of the hill the beginning of your hike is downhill which means the end of your hike will be back up the hill. Worth planning for. The play structures in the park are old and very limited but are better than nothing. The upper picnic area has only a metal Merry-Go-Round and teeter totter. The lower picnic area as a couple of other items including swings but still not much going on there. There are nice picnic pavilions available in the...
