Table Rocks and the associated area are part of the privately owned Mohonk Preserve. To hike this area there is a $15/person charge. While there are fine views of the Catskills from various points along several of the trails, the hiking trails themselves are only so-so, crossing maintained fields and mostly upland hardwood forests. While the Table Rocks, a quartzite conglomerate outcrop that is split by deep fissures, are by themselves impressive, there are many other excellent rock formations nearby that are far more varied in scope and scenic value. For instance, the Shawagunk Ridge State Forest off NY52 east of Ellenville offers spectacular views of the western ridges and much more varied hiking and there is no cost. Similarly, there is nearby Sam's Point Area at Minnewaska, where there is the modest fee of $10/vehicle. A tilted plane of stone bisected in dozens of places by deep, narrow crevices. The view of the mountains is awesome. Some caution is warranted.
