The John Burroughs Lodge in Roxbury, NY is a nice historic site to visit. The lodge offers a variety of short hiking trails as well as a chance to see the place where renowned conservationist John Burroughs lived. Exhibits can be found on the hiking trails and near the house about the life of John Burroughs. The trails that surround the house are easy to moderate hikes. Altogether, there are a little less than 2 miles of hiking trails. All of the trials have nice views and interpretive panels. For those who are interested there is a hiking badge that you can earn by hiking trails that were important to John Burroughs. Two of them are here at the lodge The house at the historic site is known as Woodchuck Lodge. It was built by John’s brother Curtis in 1863. The house is a small wooden cabin that is befitting of Burroughs himself. Here he did most of his writing and works. He would often be seen hiking around in the surrounding hills and mountains. Burroughs was famous in his time, in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford visited Burroughs and there are makers on the property to commemorate their visits. The gravesite of John Burroughs can also be found here. Next to his gravesite you will find Boyhood Rock the place where John’s life as a conservationist began. Currently, the house is not open for tours due to renovations. Check the website to see if this has changed. The site is free to visit and you can always walk or hike here.
