I've honestly never been to a place with worse service :( Maybe it's because I am not a local, but this winery only treats people nice/promptly if they are from their wine club (which we weren't in because we were just visiting the Hamptons). The only reason I may go back is because the wine is actually pretty good. I would only go there to buy a bottle and leave.
As soon as we come in, we were asked to stand on the side of the entrance because we were not wine club members and they needed to look for space for us; meanwhile there were handfuls of people outside laying in the grass, standing, etc. with their wine at hand (which we verbalized we were okay with). They let in about 8-10 wine club members behind us while we stood for about 10-15 minutes not knowing what's going on. We could not order a wine flight or any food because we did not have a table... while there were people laying on the grass with flights and food on the ground. There was also an area with tables outside that others were sitting at unreserved/unattended so I don't know why we couldn't sit there and get food. We drank one glass of wine and left.
It seemed like they were promoting wine club service exclusively and were withholding basic accommodations for us simply because we were walk-ins, even though they had plenty of space/ways to make it work. And if you decide to get a reservation, you have to pay money just to hold a spot (which doesn't go towards your stay to my knowledge). It really left a sour taste in our mouths when we visited, I wish we had gone...
Read moreMy wife and I go to the wineries frequently, almost exclusively on the north fork. Today we were at Wolffer and decided to check out another winery that we hadn't been to, on the way home. There weren't many choices, but Channing was on the way so we figured we'd give it a shot. The estate looked pretty nice and we got a seat outside by the vines with an umbrella. My wife ordered a dessert wine and I got the white wine flight, which the waiter said was popular. They brought us our wine on a really cool wine glass tree. This is unfortunately where all the good ends...
The white flight came with 5 pours. Not a single one was even drinkable. I'm not talking it was just ok and tolerable enough to choke it down...no. I took a few sips from each and left the rest. Every single one of them tasted like they were unfinished. Imagine you made the wine and 30% into what would be a finished product you bottled it...that's exactly what these were like to me. I've made wine myself and what I made FAR surpassed anything I had here. My wife's wine was also undrinkable and smelled antiseptic. She's usually pretty tolerable about mediocre wine and she couldn't drink hers either.
When the waitress came by and I told her she could take our wine, which looked just about as full as it did when they brought it over, she didn't bat an eyelash nor ask if we didn't like it...nothing; just took it and walked away.
I'm honestly not sure how they're in business and while I don't wish them any ill will, we will absolutely...
Read moreLast month I went to Channing Daughters with my husband and I am writing this review while enjoying the bottle of skin contact wine we brought home (Meditazione).
We had such a nice Friday afternoon at the vineyard. We did the orange wine flight and enjoyed goat cheese and crackers - which was served in a "picnic" style no frills. I love the sculpture art and that made it a true Hamptons experience for me. We enjoyed the wine and the atmosphere but truly what made this a five-star experience was Anthony Persico.
As soon as Anthony came over to our table, our afternoon changed. We were in for a ride. He gave us the history of the vineyard, and he indulged all my questions about orange/skin contact wine . He told us about the process in general as well as Channing's approach. I then expressed interest in Vermouth and wanted to try one after our flight was complete. As we sipped the Vermouth - I learned the history and context for the fortified wine. Anthony's excitement made me even more excited to explore Vermouth and learn more about it & I came home with a bottle of Channings early spring blend.
The vineyard overall is great, but Anthony is what made our experience...
