Warning: This review is mostly about honeycrisps, with a slice (pun intended) of Ski-Hi nostalgia.
I have visited Ski-Hi since I was a little kid! I started visiting so long ago, in fact, that I remember when there were 'samples' of each apple, each sample being a full-sized apple! As a kid, I'd try as many as I could! lol I'd then get sick and not want apples for a while. My parents did nothing to stop me, probably because they never yelled at me for eating fruit. Besides the samples being gone, not much else has changed.
I was super-juiced up to arrive, which is not unusual. Every year is like a trip back down memory lane. The view is absolutely stunning, especially looking West and North in Fall. The drive from the West, South, and East are all beautiful. When approaching from the East, you're basically just leaving Devil's Lake State Park. Ski-Hi is easy as apple pie to find (good signage), and even easier to want to stay there forever, cheeks full of fresh apples. The property itself is cute, and offers views of orchards, places to sit, and a nice-sized parking lot. There is also a large green space just West of parking, which is a great place to stretch your legs.
Sadly, there were no apple cider doughnuts or pie left when we got there (on a weekday), but we piled up 6 large bags of honeycrisps. Their honeycrisp apples are out of Dodge... well, out of Sauk, but you get the gist. They're so sweet, juicy, heavy, crisp, and ridiculously fresh that you would be hard-pressed (again with the puns) to find a better honeycrisp ever. You can tell by the snap you get when you bite into one that these are special apples indeed. There is NO wax, which delights me. I've always washed apples well with a drop of Dawn, a quarter cup of vinegar, and with my sink 1/3rd full of lukewarm water, and a soft sponge. With Covid still chomping along, I'm even more cautious about washing my produce. Once I washed and rinsed the apples up, I left them to dry completely on racks overnight, and then gently placed each in a fridge drawer, with clean cheesecloths for cushioning. It has been about 3 weeks now, and they are still perfect, and will likely remain that way in the fridge for a couple of months. If you don't like cold apples, just remove one from the fridge a few hours beforehand to sit at room temp.
We're plowing through the apples now in hopes of picking up more before these delights are gone until next season. I wanted to try the Wolf River variety, but some cute little kid who was "shopping" while unsupervised by his parents and he dropped a bag of apples into my cart. When his parents realized his error, they took my Wolf River apples and gave me another bag of honeycrisps. I guess my honeycrisp obsession is here to stay. That little kid made sure of it. Hahahaha
Seriously, check out Ski-Hi! They're worth every penny...
Read moreWe went out to the Ski-Hi Fruit Farm for apple picking, and they certainly did not disappoint! First, the farm is very easy to get to - it's right off the highway, and they have a nice big sign to make it easy to see where to turn. After that, you really can't miss the place! On one side, there's the farm store, and the other is the orchard. If you're heading to the orchard, follow the signs for U-Pick into the dirt parking area and down the road through the orchard. You'll see plenty of signs for where to park. Be aware we parked on tall grass - I wouldn't recommend bringing a sports car or motorcycle out there. My Civic handled it just fine. Once parked, we were greeted by friendly staff who sent us into the orchard to fill our bag. And fill it we did! This orchard has some of the largest honey crisp apples we've ever seen, and while we couldn't fit many in the small bag, they were worth the price. We also got a few small apples of other types, and, by the time we finished, we had 5 pounds of apples to bring home and probably ate a pound each. All of the apples we had were delicious, and it was well worth the price. We've been to a few other orchards in the area, and this is by far...
