I have driven over this bridge a number of times, but this was the first time I was ever on the pedestrian walkway. For driving, traffic is usually good on the bridge unless someone breaks down. The view is great, being able to see the buildings of both Niagara Falls and Buffalo, as well as a long the Niagara River.
The pedestrian walkway is only open on the Eastern Bridge, and is accessed on the south side from the bike trail (that has a parking area just to the west of the bridges), and is the end of the bike path leading to Beaver Island State Park on the North. The path is pretty narrow overall, but gets down to one lane when you get to the area with the girders. Luckily, one can duck in the spaces between the girders to let...
Read moreThis bridge deserves less than 1 star! The design of this bridge is absolutely horrific and causes a nightmarish commute. Why is this bridge so narrow? Most people seem to have difficulty staying in one of the two designated lanes because it is difficult to judge the distance between the lane marker and the retaining wall. Why is this bridge so high? I have yet to see any yachts or cruise ships pass under it! The bridge is clearly not meant to support large trucks with professional drivers along side people with a general passenger license in small cars. It needs to be torn down and completely redesigned. The Tappan Zee Bridge between Rockland and Westchester Counties in downstate NY is...
Read moreFun exciting fact, you can in fact walk across this bridge as a pedestrian free of charge! It is a heck of a view, I strongly recommend it. There is limited street parking on the mainland side of the bridge along Rte 266. If you travel up towards the center of the bridges towards the toll booths you will come across the path that takes you up onto the bridge deck. It is not a very steep incline despite it looks it. Should be doable for almost anyone. Once at the top, keep gazing in the direction of the northbound traffic and you will be able to see the Mist from Niagara Falls, as well as Niagara USA and Ontario. Its a pretty neat sunset in that...
