My favorite state park in Wisconsin. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The Ranger has been the same ranger every time I have gone in the last 4 years. He is always very nice and helpful, especially when someone had parked themselves right in our camping spot during the week and didn't think about the weekend and moving their gigantic set up back to their campsite. We were given a new spot for the night while the campsite hoppers were forced back into their campsite. Fountains and restooms seem to have been updated this year, 2024. Restrooms are well maintained. Showers are available if you don't like to rough it for the weekend. Bring your own water for drinking/cooking. The levels of nitrate are above the federal standard. Infants and pregnant women shouldn't be drinking it. We mostly use it for washing dishes. Views are absolutely gorgeous and if you can make the trek up the peaks, it's absolutely worth it! Visit the overlook and catch a gorgeous view of the sunset over Trempealeau Bay and off behind Minnesota across the other side of the Mississippi River.
Highly recommend driving the 20 minutes north to Kinstone outside Fountain City. You will not regret visiting the monoliths and stone circles. It is dog friendly, but they do have cats on the property. So please be courteous of the cats. They are super friendly and may...
Read moreGorgeous river views! The bluff trails along the river are a must. The trails are challenging and very vertical at times, so bring very good shoes, water, and a decent fitness level. We stayed in the group campsites, which are very private with lots of thick trees between sites and a short hike in from the parking lot. Lots of tall trees that were beautiful and did a nice job of protecting our tents from high winds and driving rain that came through one night. Visited in early August during high water and there were plenty of mosquitoes to go around, but no ticks were found by anyone in our group. Bring your canoe or kayak, as there are beautiful marshes and backwaters to explore. Interestingly, there's a busy railroad that runs right along the river bank and you can hear trains passing throughout the day and night, but it really didn't disturb our visit at all. Campground is well maintained with a "pack in, pack out" policy on trash. The city of Trempealeau is nearby with several restaurants and coffee shops, and Winona is about a 20 minute drive away if you're looking for larger...
Read moreParrot State Park is located in a beautiful area along the Mississippi River. It is in Trempealeau, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, and is about a 30-minute drive north from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. People who live here have named it God's country. And it surely is. In the fall, this 1270-acre state park and its surrounding area is a blaze of color. If you choose, you may climb Brady's Bluff and look out over the Mississippi and get a great view of the river, Trempealeau river and Trempealeau mountain. On the other side of the Mississippi, you can see the great state of Minnesota and its many bluffs that have been carved out from the river's rushing waters. If you like activities such as camping, kayaking, hiking, fishing, boating, biking, bird watching, sightseeing, etc, this is a wonderful place to visit. The locals are very friendly and educational. Most would love to tell you stories and the history of this old and interesting place to visit, play, come back to year after year, retire to, or stay even longer....
