The Wild Center is a natural history museum located in Tupper Lake, NY. The museum offers both a variety of educational indoor interactive displays and outdoor recreational activities. The museum does a good job showing the joys of the Adirondacks including animal wildlife, hiking, and water sports. The museum has it's own set of hiking trails and "the Wild Walk" which a journey into the treetops, with nice views of the surrounding scenery. The best part of this museum is their holiday lights or "Wild Lights" display. The holiday lights display goes from late November until early February. The museum decorates the "Wild Walk": and some of their hiking trails with beautiful holiday lights. Their light displays are hard to find anywhere else, and are a must see during the holidays! If you have no interest the museum, the lights are worth the price of admission. During the year the hiking trails are fairly easy to do and provide a nice escape. The Wild Center is a good place to get an introduction to Adirondack recreational activities. The indoor museum displays are mostly for kids, and most everyone can get something out of them. If you're a serious Adirondack outdoorsman than the displays will not be that interesting because you will already have seen most the museum displays in outdoors. There is also a movie theater inside that plays movies about the Adirondacks every half hour. The gift shop is large and has much Adirondack themed merchandise. It is best to purchase tickets ahead of time online.

Eat and drink before you come. We arrived around lunch time and figured we'd grab something at the cafe before exploring the museum. Ended up buying a bag of chips and that's it. We visited years ago and ate a full lunch at the cafe. You can get a cup of soup and some packaged snacks. I wish I'd known this or seen it anywhere on their website. After touring the museum and wild walk, went to fill up our empty water bottles at the drinking fountain but they are shut off. Cafe was already closed despite there still being at least 30 minutes until close. At least have a beverage vending machine available. Nothing has changed here in several years but there were areas blocked off for construction so maybe something new is coming hopefully. Heard a great presentation by one of the biologists with Draco the rat snake. That presentation was a highlight of our visit this time. We didn't come in contact with any other staff members engaging or interacting with guests which was a bummer. I do feel like this place took a hit from the pandemic. We visited in the middle of a Saturday afternoon and the place was dead. We were the only people on the wild walk area. Kiddo had fun but not sure we'll continue to travel to visit here.

Overall a great experience. We arrived right at opening around 10. However since we parked around 9:45, there were no parking attendants out front. They don’t sell tickets inside anymore so we had to awkwardly walk out side against traffic to get our tickets. It was kind of weird. (There are two spots for electric vehicles!) The museum itself is pretty small and took about an hour to walk though with a 5 and 8 year old. There are a lot of exhibits to look at from live animals local to the area to exhibits relating to the area/adirondacks. There are a few interactive things, but it’s all geared towards older kids. This definitely isn’t a “play” museum. The gift shop was awesome. So many cool and unique ADK type things! (We spent like $200). The highlight was the outside area. The kids had fun exploring the trails, the walkways and other fun things along the way including the “ball run.” It was pretty hot on the trails with no breeze however there was a lot of shade and plenty of places to sit down. We spent about 3 hours total at The Wild Center including inside, outside and the gift shop. When we were leaving the parking lot was quite filled up by then. Definitely a cool place that is 100% worth the visit!

We walked around the museum first, there were several things for my toddler to check out fish, turtles and hands on activities. Very educational for the surrounding area. Unfortunately the otters were not visible during our time there. I do wish there had been more signs as to where to go. We were given a map but didn’t know if we had to exit through the museum or go back outside so we ended up walking through a giant gift shop then cafe and were not sure where to go- we ended up going back out the way we came in and walked around to the pond trail. The animal viewing area was less than spectacular for the price we paid to enter. A staff member does stand there and just watch you as you are “viewing” at the three animal groups ( ravens, porcupines and some other bird I’m not recalling) I found that part quite a bit awkward in the silence. The trails were marked but we ended up walking in a circle after the pond trying to find the sky top area, luckily we ended up finding our way there and my daughter loved that part. Very clean on the sky area and the museum. Overall, not sure the price was equivalent to the experience but worth checking out at least once, if you are in the area!
