I recently visited to J. Henry & Sons Bourbon Farm, which is not far from Madison, WI. This was such an enlightening experience that went beyond just sampling fine bourbon. Located on a historic family farm that has thrived for over five generations, this distillery embodies a profound connection to the land and its harvest.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Jaydon, whose enthusiasm for bourbon was both infectious and informative. He introduced us to their unique bourbon, crafted from heirloom red corn, wheat, and rye, all grown on their farm. This approach not only showcases Wisconsin's rich agricultural legacy but also infuses each bottle with a distinct, local flavor.

The rustic charm of their tasting room creates the perfect ambiance for a bourbon exploration. Surrounded by an array of bourbon bottles, each with its unique flavor profile, Jaydon guided us through their offerings. The signature five-year-old bourbon, with its blend of caramel, vanilla, and cinnamon notes, was a standout. However, it was their Patton Road Reserve, a single barrel proof expression, that truly showcased their mastery in crafting complex, flavorful spirits.

The tour extended beyond the tasting room to the grounds and rickhouses, where we witnessed the aging process of their bourbon. The rows of barrels, aging and absorbing the character of the surroundings, were a testament to their commitment to quality. J. Henry & Sons leverages Wisconsin's extreme seasonal changes to enhance the bourbon's complexity, a unique approach that contributes significantly to the final product.

Our visit was an immersive journey into the heart of Wisconsin's bourbon-making tradition. For anyone who appreciates the art of finely crafted spirits, J. Henry & Sons is a must-visit...

Sometimes the best stops are the ones you don’t plan—and J. Henry & Sons Distillery proved exactly that.

My wife and I were heading up to Alma, Wisconsin for a camping trip when she looked up how close J. Henry was. Only about 30 minutes out of the way, so we figured, why not? That quick detour turned into one of the highlights of our trip.

The moment we pulled in, we were struck by how scenic and welcoming the property felt. It’s tucked into the Wisconsin countryside with beautiful views that make you want to slow down and stay awhile. We didn’t schedule a full tour, but just walking the grounds and relaxing in the tasting room made for a fantastic visit—and we’re already planning to come back for the full experience.

The staff was top-notch—friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited to share the story behind their bourbons. They made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. I opted for a flight of six different bourbons and ryes, and every pour had something special going on. The barrel strength rye? Incredible. Easily one of my favorites I’ve ever tried—smooth, bold, and full of depth.

My wife was going to drive so I could drink, so she got a mocktail that she really enjoyed, which was a nice touch that made her feel just as much a part of the experience. As we were wrapping up, more people started coming in—it’s clear this place is getting the recognition it deserves.

J. Henry isn’t just another distillery—it’s a destination in its own right. Great people, great vibes, and even better bourbon. We’ll...

A Perfect Father's Day at J. Henry & Sons! Our family celebrated Father's Day with a tour of J. Henry & Sons, and what an absolutely fantastic experience it was! From start to finish, we were captivated, and a huge part of that was thanks to our incredible tour guide, Casey. Casey's energy was truly infectious – she had us laughing and engaged from the moment we started. Her passion for J. Henry & Sons and the bourbon-making process was evident in every word. More than just enthusiastic, her knowledge was absolutely impeccable. She answered all of our questions with such clarity and detail, making even the more complex aspects of bourbon production easy to understand and fascinating. It was clear she knows her stuff inside and out! We learned so much about the history of the distillery, the family's dedication, and the unique qualities that make J. Henry & Sons bourbon so special. The tasting at the end was the perfect way to end a wonderful afternoon. This tour was genuinely such a great way to celebrate Father's Day. Went in today with my husband and ordered a NON ALCOHOLIC orange and cranberry drink because I am very allergic to bourbon and eggs (which were in other drinks on the menu). I smelled my drink and it smelled like bourbon but was tough to be sure since it’s in the tasting room. I took a very small sip (literally a drop or two) and said there was bourbon in the drink. We asked the bartender and she was shocked and said “yes there is bourbon in the drink”. I began having trouble breathing by the time I got outside and am now covered in hives. We also looked at the photo we took of our drink and mine is frothy on top which is indicative of eggs being in the drink. Either she didn’t clean the shaker and strainer or there were eggs in the drink deliberately. There were also two bartenders and they may have mixed up shakers. If someone is ordering a Mocktail, please be certain and careful because they may have allergies and that’s why they aren’t ordering the alcohol. My husband is a bourbon guy and that’s why we stopped.
