This is an outstanding, natural, area. It's amazing what our earth is capable of. If you take a look on Google Maps, it can be seen from the satellites. It's basically - a ravine made of large rocks created naturally. It's absolutely stunning and beautiful though...if you follow it at the bottom of the ravine, it's pretty fantastic. A definite must-see for a geological formation in Wisconsin.
So, if you go - prepare to hike in. It's also on an atv trail too, but you still have to hike in and no motorized traffic is allowed. In the main entrance at the top, there is an area where you could have a picnic but don't expect tables or chairs. It's rock in an area. You can sit, overlooking the Felsenmeer too for a nice lunch. Remember to pack out when you take in - don't leave trash behind. If you have a small fire for cooking a hot dog, be absolutely sure that you have it completely extinguished.
For little kids/babies - don't bring them. 100% boring for them unless they are really into rocks and outdoors. Otherwise, save yourself the grief and take some ME time and enjoy it without the stress.
NO services here. Its a rock formation in the earth. That's it. Wear comfortable hiking shoes, again - lots of rocks and walking. If you ATV here, stay at the entrance and do not take your atv into this area. It's off limits so don't be that person.
Uneven terrain, tree roots and rocks...no pavement here and no concrete. It's all natural so be aware of the challenges for accessing this area.
Camping - I suppose a person could rustic camp, but be sure you get our Permit from the Rusk Co Forestry office for a non-conforming campsite. They are around $15 and good for 2 weeks. Remember that there are bear and other wild animals in the area so be sure to...

It's theorized that this small area was untouched by the last glacier. It has the same rugged terrain as many other sites along the Ice Age Trail. ... Sites that are much more accessible, but perhaps not as delicate. It's reported that this area shelters a few plant species that are only found in the Tundra.
The last time I was was there, we observed tire tracks from an ATV, beer cans, and an improvised fire ring.
I would suggest that some activities might be savored in a different location... Like a K.O.A., or a highway wayside... : o)
Other out-croppings of felsenmeer can be found in this region that can be viewed from a distance, or explored more conveniently, without endangering the flora, or despoiling a public treasure.
If you feel it is important for you to experience this unique site in person, then please treat this site with...
Read moreA face paced hike took about one hour to reach the Felsenmeer, on pretty easy trail conditions. Perhaps around 3 miles to get there? There were some large puddles and uphill slopes but nothing crazy. The mosquitoes and Trillium were plentiful in mid-May. Take a left once you see a pink ribbon on a tree and follow the footpath. Once you reach the bench and fire pit, following yellow flags or ribbons through the woods will get you down to the bottom. What was nice about this hike was the lack of direction and signage, which limits the people and keeps the area clean and secluded. Do a little prep ahead of time and you'll get there and enjoy this...
