I visited the mountain bike trails this past weekend, 8/18/2018, and had a great time. I am recovering from a knee injury from martial arts earlier this year so it was my first time mountain biking this season and what a first ride it was. the terrain was varied and offered something for most everyone. I often prefer technical trails and I found enough to keep me entertained throughout the day.
I tried my first flow trail and no understand why they are so much fun. I got much the same feeling as I do when coming out of the apex of a fast carve on downhill skis. I went down the twin track and really had a blast. On our last past my legs were "toast" and we faced the choice of doing the climb to get back to the twin track or taking an easier way back to the trail head. I gritted my teeth and pushed through the pain of the climb just so I could try the other side of the twin track. I preferred the right side as you face the trail from the top.
I have a race orientated xc 29" mountain bike while my bike partners brought more all mountain 27.5" bikes and based on their feedback I wish I had a more all mountain bike instead. I used all of my 100 mm travel on both front and rear suspensions. I think if I were a more advances biker or if I had been biking all season I probably would have been able to attack the trails more, but I still was able to get speed and started to slowly trust my bike around the banked corners.
As far as amenities at the trail head they were great. The the changing rooms were great and the running water was nice after the ride. There was also helmets available for use, basic bike tools, and an air pump. The trails are on private land so I was told by another rider so please treat the areas kindly so it remains available to the public.
Lastly there is no cost to ride the trails, but there are donation boxes around. I gave some money as it was the least I could do to say thank you for a great day of...
Read moreA hidden gem in Wisconsin's north woods. After expanding the trails in summer 2019, Winman will be worth a side day-trip for anybody banging around the CAMBA bike trails further west. More on that below.
Winman has a solid network of intermediate to intermediate-advanced trails. Styles range from old-school cross country to swoopy bermed flow, and even includes a side-by-side slalom course (hint - right side is faster...). Beginners can also ride some of the double-track ski trails. All the trails were in great shape. Strava segments exist for just about everything.
The trails do wind around themselves a bit and there are a lot of intersections, including with some ski-only and snowshoe trails. But there is a method to the layout, they are generally well-marked, and we were well-oriented after one loop. I can see why some other reviewers noted it, but for me was not bothersome enough to even remove one star.
The trailhead is FANTASTIC. A huge, airy sitting area with tables, cushy chairs, and a kitchen-like corner surrounding a working fireplace for those cooler days and the snow-loving crowds. There are six bathrooms that are nicer than what a lot of homes have. I'd actually give this place six stars if the bathrooms had showers (there is room)!
In Aug 2019 the trails are set to expand to about 15 miles, and there's another expansion planned after that. Given that mileage, the variety of riding, the facilities, and proximity to restaurants, etc in nearby Manitowish Waters, Winman is seriously worth the drive. It's only 60 minutes from the CAMBA Namakegan cluster, and only about 90 minutes from Cable, so if you're riding those trails and want some bike-park like fun, make the drive. ...
Read moreWe visited today for the first time on a recommendation from cyclists who rode Tour da Lake with us last weekend. Winman Trails is an amazing facility and a gem in the Northwoods. There are mountain bike trails for all levels. The attention to detail in the grooming and designing were the first things we noticed. There is a wonderful feature park right in front. There are flow trails that wind beautifully, a bridge trail that's just that, an Earn It trail that begins with a cardiac climb, and many more. There are bypasses for almost all the features if you find them too challenging. They have outdoor seating with shade cover, hammocks in the trees, fire pits for gatherings, a pristine welcome lodge with immaculate bathrooms and changing rooms, a common area, and a beverage bar and store. I had to take photos of the details we've never seen in other parks, complimentary bug spray (after last night's storms a MUST) and biking helmets to borrow, incredible! Finally, the people, not only employees but those riding as well, friendly, courteous, conscientious, truly making our experience 5 stars. It was worth the 45 minute drive from the U. P. and then some. We will definitely be back....
