The trail from Peck Rd starts off easy with little elevation gain. Lots of mud, but to be expected after a March thaw. The cliffs at Elmridge Leanto are impressive and the leanto itself is an inviting place to rest and have a snack before the real climb begins. The ascent from here, though steady, is relatively mild for a Catskills High Peak. Pre-spring hike offers partial views that would otherwise be obscured by foliage in warmer months. The peak itself has breathtaking views; the first with an unparalleled and close up view of the blackhead range. You can see all four high peaks from this ledge. Just a short distance further and to the east there are two sweeping views of the Hudson Valley, the first with a slightly more revealing view of the northern foothills. All said, it was a rewarding experience for a moderate climb. Though clocking in at a lengthy 6.6 miles, it was easily accomplished by my seven year...
Read moreWe hiked the peak and back, and it can be done comfortably in one morning or afternoon. I would come back for an overnight as there is a nice lean to spot at 1.2 miles up, also various places where that would be great tent spots just beyond. There is an especially nice section of white spruce that you can tell has never been farm field before, as there is a rock wall right up to it when you enter and another when you leave it. The forest floor in that section is peat and many tree roots, ferns, seems more ancient than any other part...
Read moreTrailhead to Windham High Peak actually starts at the Escarpment Trailhead. The location that comes up when you Google Windham high peak is around 2.5 miles away from the trailhead and there is nothing there. Park in the Elm Ridge Parking, walk across the street and follow the blue markings. The trail is 3.4 miles one way. There is a significant elevation gain but it is nicely spread out. Hike itself is nice and views from the top is also good. I’ll give 5 star, but this does not compare well to trails in Adirondacks or east of...
