I have been to KTD four times, each one a treasure. When thinking of KTD I call it “My Mountain Home", it’s just the name I’ve assigned to this wonderful monastery. It humbles me to think Khempo Karthar Rinpoche has been working quietly since I was one year old, to help KTD flourish and share the Buddha Dharma with everyone. You might not understand immediately, however, be prepared for perhaps a few unexpected surprises that you take home in your heart!
People come to KTD for different reasons, and from all paths. Divorce, cancer survivor, curious, just had a baby, dharma practitioner, supporting a friend or family member, etc… and from all economic situations, you do not need to be perfect to be welcome.
This is a gentle yet vibrant environment, and I recommend keeping an open mind without a preset idea of what you will experience. Authentic Dharma instruction taught by highly qualified Lamas, masters, and scholars is offered in a very respectful atmosphere. It tickles me to see folks walking about that I recognize from H.H. Karmapa’s teachings.
The monastery itself is beautiful with a purpose, the care and love H.H. Karmapa has for all sentient beings catches your eye everywhere you look.
Room accommodations are very clean and modern; please note the weekly rates and also a scholarship is offered on most teachings. Children are welcome. If you would like to do a personal retreat you can make arrangements as well. The dorm option is my favorite because it is located in the lower level of the Shrine building, and I truly appreciate...

Read moreIf you are looking to connect with the authentic teachings of the Buddha, this is the place to be. Just to sit in the beautiful shrine room, surrounded by many blessed statues, paintings, brocades, offering lamps, and the exquisite wall and ceiling paintings, is enough to experience the calming of your mind. It is a scared space. The blessings over the years from all the great masters that have taught there and all the practices that have been done and dedicated to the welfare of all sentient beings, is palatable.
There are many classes available, as well as teachings by great Tibetan masters and highly trained lamas, monks, and nuns, and tours of the main shrine room and the various smaller shrines, which includes information about the buildings and the history of the monastery.
The mountain views from the grounds and from the monastery are spectacular.
There is always tea available in the dining room and often snacks of blessed food, leftover from various offering practices.
Be sure to call or stop by, pick up a schedule at the front desk, and take advantage of this rare opportunity. You are always...
