I had been seeing the Pioneer Museum of Alabama for several years on trips I would take to South Alabama but never had an opportunity to stop. My wife and I love to visit places like this because we love the history and the things that can be learned. So we were coming through Troy, AL today 5/20/17 and decided to stop. They have an inside museum and also the grounds with lots of historical buildings and an old locomotive. We paid the $10 each for the facility. They have a museum inside that was filled with a lot of very interesting things and some great history. The grounds were a different story. They have a pretty decent collection of historical buildings on the property along with a covered bridge and an old locomotive. We enjoyed the inside, but were very disappointed with the grounds. More than half of the buildings were closed and locked so that you could not even look inside. I understand that volunteers are hard to come by these days, but they could have at least opened the buildings and roped off so that you could not go in, but could look inside. We were not the only people that were disappointed, we spoke with another couple who felt the same as we did. We spent our money, and $20 may not be that big of a deal to everyone, but I didn't plan on just wasting $20. I have been to Burritt Museum in Huntsville, AL. Save your money by not stopping at the Pioneer Museum and make the trip to the Burritt Museum. They have a lot more buildings and they are all open. On another note, the staff that we encountered at the Pioneer Museum we're very nice. All in all, a...
Read moreWe were so excited to stop and see the moon tree and take a break from the road and see the pioneer village. That was until the caretaker and her worker minion came after us for being there 10minutes before they opened. All we did was park in parking lot and look at the moon tree while in the parking lot and await them to open at 9:00 am and then a rude lady came out and was what I deem uneccasarily rude. She seemed to be upset that we were there early and after her behavior we decided we wanted to leave and not stay and see anything else. In conclusion the owner, worker , manager I don't know here is not very nice and not very welcoming. They depend on grants and donations to run this facility. So if you decide to stop here ensure you take lots and lots of donation money so they can welcome you with open arms. To bad I would have been happy to make a considerable donation if this place was more welcoming to my...
Read moreWe originally planned to visit all three museums in Troy but spent the entire morning at the Pioneer Museum. The museum was full of items from the Pioneer days, the Civil War, and even had a large selection of Native American exhibits. Some of the exhibitions were closed or under renovation. I loved the entire museum, and even my grandkids had a great time. It would have been nice to see the inside of the log cabins. Several had plexiglass viewing ports, but most had hasps and padlocks. Many of the log cabins were in poor condition and had wood rot and termite damage. The church roof eaves did not overhang far enough over the log walls; the chinking was improper and allowed water to damage the logs. It was unfortunate to see so many of the cabins needing repair. I would highly recommend Pioneer Museum for class field trips or family trips. We spent 3 hours here and did not even...
