The experience was amazing with the kids. They learned all about Native Americans recently at school so it was very cool to see their way of life in such a realistic way. They have artifacts that give you a good idea of what their daily life was like. Then you get to walk their "courtyard" and see how each building played an important role in their lives. Their burials or what we call funerals, were very interesting and seemed very small and sacred which is not how we do things these days. The gift shop and museum was neat but it did bother me that the staff just stood there and started you down the entire time you walked around. It would be okay to offer help or facts about the things we are looking at or even just random conversation but it felt very awkward that they didnt talk and just started us down the entire time. We bought a few things and left. I would have bought more had I not felt so awkward in...
Read moreIt was ok. It's free, other than the gas to drive there. There's an 18 minute video to watch inside. They can start it whenever you arrive. The video was well done. There are displays of artifacts inside. Then you can walk over to the mound area. There are 3 small huts. We were able to enter 2 of them. One was closed. And there's a short nature trail once you exit the mound area, and it brings you back around to the visitor center. There are also some souvenirs you can purchase. The restrooms were clean. There are picnic tables available but we decided to each lunch at the Burger Shack in Mt. Gilead a short drive away. The worst part about the experience were the bugs inside the mound area and on the trail. Lots of gnats and flies making it very uncomfortable to walk around. A LOT of bumble bees flying around the huts, which made it difficult to enter. The whole experience took...
Read moreI had planned to visit Town Creek eventually, but it moved up on the list after I found out a local museum was closed on Saturday. I arrived at the site around 11:30am. Signed in with the staff and watched a brief film, I highly recommend that you do. The site is modest in size and easily seen in less than a half hour. One structure was closed for renovation, but the other two were open. You have to put on your imagination hat to get a sense of what it was like here. The site is peaceful, and there is a walking trail around the perimeter, which I did not explore. I did, however, drive seven miles to the town of Mt. Gilead, which is nice, so check it out while you are in the area. I did pay a second visit when I realized that I didn't see the exhibits in the visitor center, so don't...
