A small piece of desert makes its last stand against Tucson's growth and development. It is hard to believe that over 20 miles of single-track trails twist through a labyrinth of desert flora. Keep in mind that desert flora's needles and thorns are perfect persuasion to stay on the trails.
The Bunny, Snake Charmer, and Bunny's Revenge trails are not technical but do require you to pay attention. Terrain is dominated by loose sand over hard pack, it is easy to over confidently hit a turn too fast, resulting in a long-term relationship with cholla or cactus.
More advanced trails, Christmas Tree, Lobe Cactus, and a couple more reside on the north end of Fantasy Island. Here the trails have more variation in terrain relief and have more rocks. The technical features fall into intermediate range. Most features have a bypass.
To sum it up, a great place to catch a post or pre work ride. There is always something interesting to find every time you ride there. Many of the locals display their artistic prowess via making signs for the...
Read moreThis trail is no Joke. Lone cactus trail is awesome but can be dangerous at points so tread carefully. Signs could be much better and give more info about the upcoming twists and turns. Particularly one third the way in their are curves that you will take at high speed but the edge is very steep and if you drop you can seriously injure yourself. 3/4 the way in and if you take the bypass route away from the “shaft” route pay attention to the white bike and a sign that just says “drop”. When I read it I didn’t understand what it meant. But I found out the hard way. After few feet you’ll come up on an elevation that is 6 feet high at least and an immediate drop’ it’s like a jumping off point then the trail takes an immediate sharp turn. Very very dangerous and unless you know about it you’ll feel the impact. Signs could be much more informative and with illustrations.
If you’re a beginner, you can start with the “bunny trail” which is much more manageable.
Overall great course abd...
Read moreRode Lone Cactus trail today for the first time.
This is marked as a blue/intermediate trail, and the vast majority of it is just that, but there were about a dozen spicy little features tossed in the mix that got the blood pumping, especially if you stayed off the brakes.
Lone Cactus was very well maintained and several sections were really nicely designed.
Easy enough for beginners who've been riding awhile, fun enough for the seasoned intermediate rider if you're looking for some time in the saddle and stay off the brakes when hitting the short downhill sections.
No big air (or medium air) but if you know where to keep/pickup speed there are a few sections where you can earn a couple frequent flyer points.
All in all, a really nice trail, speed determines difficulty at several sections, very well maintained and designed.
Update: 2 FEB 23
The trail maintenance crew has done a fantastic job with FI! Drops, rollers, a few table tops, just great...
