Conchas is a beautiful lake with a huge water play area on the south end and a long, winding canyon extending extending the lake for 20+ miles north. The developed sites on the north end are excellent for RV or tent camping and the restroom/shower facilities are clean and well-lit. There are rough camping and undeveloped sites at a few points around the lake, but actual shore camping is mostly available at a private campground called Cannon Cove. I haven't camped there, only driven through on a busy 4th of July weekend, but it was packed. I can't honestly say it was an appealing site seeing it so crowded, but I can imagine that it might be a good spot during the week, especially if you prefer to anchor your boat in the coves right by your camp site. On the south end of the lake is a small store that is generally well stocked. They sell gas, even advertising that their gas does not contain ethanol. I've only seen it happen once, but they have run out of gas there. There are also boat and rv storage units behind the store (I store my boat there year-round). On the north end there is a marina, a small store, a bar, and a boat engine mechanic. The marina recently suffered some heavy wind damage and the slips were closed. If you intend to use them it would be worth a call to check on availability. [Update] The slips are all removed now. My understanding from speaking to the Park Rangers is that they are considering vendors to take over the North Dock marina which is currently closed, but there is no timetable yet. This is such a great lake It would be great if they could get something nice down there like they have done at...
Read moreWe decided to visit here based on all the great reviews. Boy have we been disappointed. From the start it has been a headache. It's another one of those, "due to Covid," excuses for poor customer service. We called the office with a few questions before booking. Several calls later with no answer. Due to Covid only online or phone reservations can be made. We decided to just show up to pick our site since the website showed a fairly empty park. We arrived, no one in the office, lights on, and still no answer. This park is set up for the self pay envelope system, but still you have to reserve online. That being said, if they are not going to accept envelope pay or pay in person there should not be a $4 online fee to reserve. So, we reserved online at a nice spot with a view then we went down to the lake bed to find it full of garbage, rusted steel cables, rusted barrells, and concrete blocks with rusted 2" steel pipes sticking out. I had to pull my 5 year old away, not very child safe or inviting. Another eye sore was on entering the camping area there is an old run down mobile home trailer that is falling apart. We have visited a lot of other States' state parks and this has to be the least and poorest managed...
Read moreI loved this park. The staff were very friendly and helpful but gave you your privacy. I camped at a first came first serve non-electric campsite with a picnic shelter. However there are lots of electric sites and reservations can be made. When I was there, there was no water as they were having issues. I always travel with 12 gallons of drinking water so it didn't affect me....well apart from the fact that the showers and flushing toilets were closed because of it. Porta Potties were set up in front of each bathroom building. There are lots of roadways to walk the dogs but I wouldn't suggest hanging out outside after dark as there are coyotes in the area. I travel with 2 dogs and my Australian Shepherd was very agitated at night. Every morning, there was fresh coyote poop beside my picnic shelter and my tire was peed on. If you have small dogs, be careful of the hawks. They are pretty large and kept circling around my campsite when my elderly Maltese was outside. In fact one of them began a dive toward him and my Australian Shepherd stepped over him to shelter him from the hawk. Phew😕There are also huuuuge tarantulas. Lovely views...
