Beautiful art, beautiful grounds, always a nice day...
I have been to Gilcrease Museum many times over the past several years and each visit was nice. When a grandchild reaches the age where I believe they will enjoy the museum I plan a day trip that includes Gilcrease. A good age is very child dependent and I've taken 8 year olds that did quite well and enjoyed the Museum and some I've waited until they were 11-12. I always enjoy the western art and Gilcrease has an excellent collection. Some of their Russell's are spectacular. Actually I think all Russell's are spectacular but Gilcrease has some of the most spectacular. Gilcrease seems to always have a very interesting special exhibit of some type that is only there for a limited time so be sure and check their web site to see what is current. The people are always friendly and helpful and I have always enjoyed walking the grounds. The view of downtown Tulsa is wonderful. As I recall the last time I had children with me there were a few hands on activities but it is mostly a place to look. I typically don't take the grandchildren to the museum restaurant but have had very nice meals there with adults in the past. Gilcrease is certainly a...
Read moreI’ve never felt like I was more unwelcome in a museum or in general somewhere I pay to enter. The front desk man was so rude about giving me a complimentary water (there was none to be purchased and the water fountain was broken). He only had one tiny little bottle and it must have been the biggest inconvenience to grab more because when he walked 15 feet to the closet, he was stomping around and walking fast enough to show he was irritated. Then proceeded to slam down one more bottle without saying a word. It was the most uncomfortable and unwelcoming experience I’ve had in a long while with someone I don’t even know. I ended up crying for over 20 minutes and had to retreat to the restroom. I feel like I wasn’t wanted in the museum and in turn immediately gave me the feeling to leave. It’s hard enough for me to even walk- I’m pregnant with twins and wanted to get out and come to a place I haven’t been to in many years. Representation is everything! I’ve got a bad view on Gilcrease is second to Philbrook most certainly! If not even to compare. Get a new front desk person!...
Read moreVisited with my 12 year old daughter during a recent trip to Tulsa, OK. I came here because I read somewhere that this museum had a display on the Holocaust, so I wanted to bring her here and let her learn about it. Once we got to the museum and paid our entrance fee, I inquired about being directed to the Holocaust display. I was greatly disappointed to learn that they DO NOT have anything remotely close to that on display at Gilcrease Museum. Guess the mistake was mine in not double checking that this was the correct facility. I was told by a female docent that the Jewish museum on the south central side of Tulsa had a Holocaust display, but we didn't end up going there. Instead, we enjoyed a couple hours here looking at all of the Native American history and displays. We also enjoyed quiet time in the large sitting room they have that looks out over the horizon.
After we had walked through the museum, there is an adjacent park and pond that we walked down to and around. Lush, green garden grounds made for an...
