Cranberry Bog is a one of a kind, natural and National Treasure!! It's the only know bog surrounded by water in the world. It is over 13,000,000 million years old and was brought here by the last glacier that came through this area. There are many different, beautiful plants and two different orchids that grow on the bog. Some of the plants were used medicinally by the native Indians and early settlers. Unfortunately, the birds and the wind have caused things that are not native to the bog to grow, like trees and poison sumac! Normally, the sumac is kept cut back along the public boardwalks so that visitors can see the various plants, however, due to the work being done on the 250+ year old earthen dam, the lake has been drained and getting equipment to cut back the sumac out to the bog has been impossible the last few years.
