This beautiful preserve is 279 acres of former farmland that is being returned to a more natural state. The restoration of meadows, wetlands and woods provides habitat for birds, butterflies, bees, fox and deer. Birds benefiting from the habitat provided include Eastern Meadowlark, Eastern Blue Bird, Northern Harrier, America Woodcock, American Kestrel, Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Wood Duck, Killdeer, and Red-winged Blackbird. Tunnel Farm Woods is where you will find a what can be accomplished when you reforest an old farmland and also where you will find the connecting trail to Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association's (WVWA) Green Ribbon Trail. I would have given this preserve a five star but for (1) very limited parking (spots for 8 cars), (2) lack of water crossings and (3) not enough trail markers. The red fox loop trail goes down to creek at the northwestern edge of the property there are several cinder blocks and two large pieces of cement that are being used for crossing. The preserve should take a page from the WVWA and put in cement stepping stones. I was on this property two days after it rained and there were several areas that had water flowing...
Read moreAnother little (or actually not so little, as it turns out) gem of tranquility where you least expect it. Located at the edge between Ambler and North Wales Boro, this formerly private property has been donated to National Lands Trust. Several easy walking trails take you through grassland, wetland, and woodland. There's a small parking lot accessible from Swedesford Road, and a walking entrance at the corner of Evergreen and Hazlewood drives in a nearby housing development. For the really adventurous, the property abuts the Wissahickon Creek Watershed Trail which runs from North Wales Boro into Philadelphia. There is parking available at Parkside Place if you want to hike in from there. Some areas are almost perpetually muddy, so be careful, or wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty.
Edit 6/13/21
Visited again yesterday with a friend and her dogs (miniature schnauzers). Wonderful walk as always, but at one point we were being stalked by a canine I firmly believe to have been a coyote. Everyone is ok, just please be careful if you're...
Read moreA lovely and peaceful natural preserve. There are several unpaved trails through woodlands and old farm land that are marked with color arrow signs. Some trails are mostly sunny and others part sun and woodlands. The trail system is compact with about 4 trails from 1.2 - 1.4 mi. You can extend your walk by looping all trails. The yellow trail is across Swedesford Rd and tricky to find. It’s 1.4 mi round trip. Facing Swedesford Rd, to your LEFT walk on elevated grass trail about 250-300 steps. You will see a sign for crossing Swedesford to yellow trail. Careful while crossing and stepping off road to trail. There’s a slight drop from road. Also on return don’t trip getting back across road (because I did!). Stay to your LEFT at beginning of yellow trail. Overall, enjoyable and very peaceful location. Restrooms for Preserve are located near main...
