We came to see the see the cherry blossoms as a way to avoid the crowds at the Tidal Basin. Never having been here during the day before I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. We arrived 5 minutes after they opened on a blustery cold Sunday. The temperature, without wind chill, was in the low 40's, so I was a bit surprised to see a lot of cars already in the parking lot. There was still plenty of spots available, but all the immediately close to the building spaces filled up quickly. People are very serious about cherry blossoms, regardless of the weather.
Regardless, the line to get in was only a few people long, including our family. The main building where you check in, includes bathrooms, a gift shop, and a small seating area by a turtle tank (and another tank with plants and perhaps an unknown animal that we couldn't see). The cherry trees by the entrance seem to reach peak bloom prior to the ones around the pond. Both that spot and the ones by the pond were pretty. Obviously, there are less trees when compared to the Tidal Basin in DC, but still lovely and no crowds. Aside from the cold weather, our kids loved the trails and the hills. Despite the length of the trails looping around the whole park, all of the kids had a great time together. The adults enjoyed the views and the sculptures along the way.
As someone who has previously only been here for the Christmas lights, I was surprised at how much larger the gardens are than just the area that is used for the light show. It can be a fairly substantial walk if desired, but all of the trails are smooth. There are no maps, either paper or on posted signs throughout the garden. Be prepared to wander for a while or download the map on your phone. We reached a point towards the end where we were starting to wonder if we were even still in the right place, but very quickly we went around a corner and saw the parking lot and buildings to orient...
Read moreWow this place is beautiful, tranquil and the ornate gardens are incredible and well kept it's so worth it to visit. My husband and I visited the 'Meadowlark Botanical Gardens' last year after moving to Virginia. It was our first garden visit in the area.
We went again during the Easter festivities and it was very cool to watch the children having a good time, hunting for eggs.
It's perfect for families, bringing out of town family/friends, wedding plans, or solo or even for a date as it's nice and refreshing, something different than go to a loud bar. At least in a garden you can hear each other especially when you start to get to know someone new in your life.
There's plenty of free parking, the entrance is very inviting, with friendly and professional staff. It's 95 acres of botanical beauties where each month there are different flowers in bloom, so it never gets boring. It's safe to walk the grounds since these are well paved and on your way you'll discover there is a pleasant variety of native species of plants, pollinators, birds, geese and turtles to keep you delighted.
The Korean Bell Garden is gorgeous, surrounded by flowers and trees.
While there are information pamphlets including a map of the grounds available for purchase, I think it's not necessary since it is easy enough to discover your way on your own.
Fees (website): young kids under 5 are free, fees: $4 for ages 6-17 & ages 18-55+, $8. To us prices are really affordable plus they need to maintain the gardens which must cost a pretty penny. Maybe this is a good way to assure visitors appreciate places like this more.
We left the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens tired but refreshed, and I got a lot of inspiration for my watercolor paintings, and fantastic photos and videos to...
Read moreMeadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia is an absolute gem and easily one of the most beautiful spots in the area. From the moment you step in, the sense of peace and serenity makes it feel like a retreat away from the busyness of Northern Virginia. The gardens are thoughtfully designed with a mix of scenic walking trails, open lawns, vibrant flower beds, and tranquil ponds that create a perfect balance of nature and artistry.
One of the highlights for me was the Korean Bell Garden, which is not only stunning but also rich in cultural significance. The ponds are another favorite, filled with koi fish, turtles, and blooming water lilies that add to the charm. There are plenty of benches and gazebos throughout, making it easy to stop, sit, and take in the views at your own pace.
What I really love is how accessible the gardens are for all ages, whether you’re on a romantic stroll, enjoying a family outing, or simply seeking quiet time alone. Parking is plentiful, and the visitor center is clean and well-maintained. Seasonal blooms mean every visit feels different, so there’s always something new to enjoy.
If you’re looking for a place to relax, recharge, or simply be surrounded by beauty, Meadowlark Botanical Gardens is a must-visit. Five stars...
