I recently visited the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands, and it was an unforgettable experience! I was thrilled to spot a myriad of bird species, including some rare ones. The highlight of my visit was the abundance of alligators! I lost count of how many I saw, lazily resting in the sun or gliding effortlessly through the waters. It was exhilarating to see these magnificent creatures up close. Another interesting aspect of the wetlands was the numerous red ant houses scattered throughout the area. It was fascinating to observe these intricate structures and imagine the busy lives of the ants that built them. Before visiting, be aware that the drive-through is currently closed, so be prepared to walk throughout the wetlands. Fortunately, you can bring electric scooters, scooters, hoverboards, or golf carts to make navigating the area more manageable. The wetlands offer free parking right outside the entrance, which is a definite plus. However, there are no washrooms or eateries in the nearby area, so plan accordingly. I would recommend visiting during the early morning or late afternoon for the best wildlife viewing...
Read moreThe wet lands were incredibly easy to find and the routes around the pond allow you to make several loops seeing different areas of the facility and extending your stay. There's a gazebo and several two level towers for viewing. The variety of wildlife to be found on the property is quite impressive. Birds of all type, insects, snakes, gators of all sizes. I even saw an otter having a sand bath on my last visit. Bald eagles have been reported but I've yet to see one. This facility is great for the handicapped and disabled. It gives us a chance to see and experience things that normally are limited to those people who are more physically able. It's nicely located in the county and far easier to get to for residents living in the southern end of the county. This area is a great place for a day trip, you can spend an hour or five. Bring your camera and a bag lunch. Expose the...
Read moreExcellent place for walking, jogging, or cycling. The wide gravel paths are open to SLOW vehicles, so if you're out excercising or walking you don't quite get the place to yourself and you've got to keep an eye out for drivers who might be slowly creeping along while looking at the birds through their binoculars.
There are several different loops through, so you don't have to travel the same loop every time. Each pond is a different ecological entity, and have slightly different animals and plant life in them, so keep an eye out.
Also don't forget to check the two other ponds to the North, they're open a little less often to traffic, but it's worth checking every time. While checking those two, don't miss heading out to Moccasin Island by continuing west on Wickham when it becomes a dirt road - a glimpse of "Real Florida" can be found...
