Virginia Has Its Own Congaree-Style Watery Forest!

Interesting and different from the usual trails in the NY - NJ - PA area. Looks like a forest, but you are mostly walking on sand, and the Cypress trees are in swamps / bogs. Cypress trees were particularly interesting because of their surface roots. Clean trails, well marked, easy to follow (more so with AllTrails on your phone). Plenty of bugs earlier in the morning on a summer day - bug spray highly recommended.

My review is for the beach park not the trail This friendly little beach is prettier than any part of VA beach, I’m glad it’s secluded and not many people stop at it, i pulled over to catch the sunset and take pictures and was not disappointed, they have a beautiful boardwalk all the way down to the beach, plenty of parking and really clean restrooms, and it’s also nearby to a lot of great restaurants.

Saturday morning. The kids are all in the living room. I’m trying to enjoy a cup of coffee with the ol’ ball-and-chain and all I hear is “I’m BORED!” “There’s NOTHING to do!” “Why can’t we go DO something!?” So I turn to my wife and say “Honey, I’m sitting right here. You don’t have to yell.” But she was right... we were slowly descending into madness. So we loaded up the family wagon and drove up to First Landing. The shady trails were nice and cool and there was plenty to see and do on our brisk 1.8 mile trek on the Bald Cypress Trail. $10 for parking was reasonable for the hour and a half we took to hike around and see frogs and turtles and an array of dogs being walked. There’s plenty of sugar gum balls to throw at your kids and when the trails cross the swampland it makes for a nice selfie-stop. We’ll absolutely revisit to try out a...

Wonderful easy hike surrounded by the bald cypress trees and their ‘knees’. The visitors center has a little bit of hands on for the little ones. Plaques with historical facts and some taxidermy get you amped for the trail. Plenty of brochures with info provided. The dogs enjoyed themselves immensely. A couple of stop off points on the trail made of wood and benches for overlooking little bits of water. Swampy and damp. But not muddy. Pine needles cover the trail floor. We got turned around once when crossing the service road through the trail but it’s a short trail so no biggie. Hiked 2...
