If you’re looking for an awesome place where you and your family can relax and not be bothered, this isn’t it. My wife and I visited the beach for about an hour and a half with our kids. It was great at first! The last hour the beach was open, a large multigenerational family flooded through beach. Despite there being ample places to walk and set up their stuff, they tore through our site, tossing trash. The guards that were rotating and in the area were no where to be seen. We watched from the water as a mother let her son put sand in my son’s boots. The mother then instructed the boy to urinate three feet away from our towel. The amount of urine was enough to make a small stream and got onto our towel! The bathroom was only ten feet away. Within minutes, the family quickly ran into the water then ran out, leaving the park. They were there less than ten minutes. The lifeguard in the shallowest end of the lake as well as the lifeguard that sits at the head of the beach were nowhere to be seen the whole time this happened.
As we left, my wife spoke to a lifeguard about what happened and I took one of our kids to our car. The family that trashed the beach and left quickly was sitting at the picnic table outside the fenced beach. They had several fishing poles and coolers.
It was clear they didn’t have tickets to the beach all. It quickly occurred to my wife and I we paid for tickets but never had to show them upon entering. No one was there to check. The family had just been fishing all day and strolled into the park without a ticket and that’s why they left in a hurry - the lifeguards were coming back.

Read moreabsolutely wonderful park! fenced in off-leash area for dogs that is rich with cedar and spruce which are anti-flea and anti-tick. Obviously the lake is a huge attraction, swimming, boating/kayaking/rafting, fishing and so much more. Picnic area too, each area is designated, i.e. swimming has a mushroom fountain and a beach and slides, changing rooms, bathrooms, etc. Miles of trails to wonder, and tons of woods to walk through, lots of good mushroom and wild herb foraging as well, we will be frequenting this place as long as we are nearby! I hear this year there is no swimming due to the plandemic (checkout plandemicmovie.com for more info), however that information was prior to the re-opening phases of virginia parks and recreation which are currently underway. It would be a tragedy to deny the people the healing powers of these beautiful waters and sacred lake and park. If you come to visit, remember always this is a safe, sacred space, so honor it in the same way you prefer to be honored in a safe sacred way - loved, appreciated, no trashing, courteous, kind, enjoying the most of every moment and having as much fun as possible integrating with the endless beauty and...
Read moreA nice park near the airport. The lake is really nice and I can't wait for the leaves to change colors. It'll be an amazing view for sure. I believe there are a few trails. We take the one with the trailhead by the water. I think the trail is kind of a figure 8 so it offers a couple options. A few things to note - after the rain we've noticed quite a bit of mushrooms along the trail. If you have dogs like we do, you'll want to jeep an eye out to make sure they don't eat them because it could potentially make them sick. In the summer, the trail is quite buggy probably because of the water so we don't hike there in the summer.
There's also a large dog park by the water if you keep driving past the first couple of parking areas. The dogs can run in and out of the water. The few times we've gone there has always been a dog or two. We generally go pretty early in the morning. There are likely a higher number of dogs later in the day if your dog likes to play with a lot of friends.
There is a beach that opens in the summer, but we haven't gone. Sounds like...
