The Heritage section is in Montgomery County, and with all they have to keep up with I have to say they do an overall great job of keeping up the trail! It's a great little hike and you never know what wildlife you'll see or reminance from the mining that the trail is named for. My only complaint is that over the last few years it has become too well known and popular. Used to have the trail to myself and loved the peace and quiet. Thanks to the staff at Montgomery County!

Great place to visit and spend some time walking along the Huckleberry Trail. The old mine is still visible but has been sealed up for safety. The history information can be found right in front of the mine. An old coal mining car and mining equipment available for observation. From the trail, walk up the curved wooden walking bridge turn right and follow the path to see the coal mine.

Neat trail. Part of a much longer one, but the coal mining loop is pretty short and easy and interesting. Bring bug spray. There are few old mining items to look at along the trail as well as a section of what I assume was canal for transport. It's too bad they fill the mine entances in. It would be cool to at least look inside.

This is a beautiful paved flat trail that is part of the larger Huckleberry Trail that currently connects Blacksburg to Christiansburg. Parking for about 10 cars can be found at the intersection of Merrimac Rd & Hightop Rd (Huckleberry Trail Parking). Or you can park at the recycling center down 701 and have immediate access to the park via a beautiful artistic wooden foot bridge. The park is on the left and right of the Huckleberry Trail and includes an off road hiking trail called Coal Miner’s Loop which is about a mile long with mild elevation changes. There are historical markers to learn about the structures that were previously on this site and there is even a rustic restroom! Kids of all ages will...

This is a really lovely loop and the coal mining artifacts are very cool. That said, THIS IS NOT A STROLLER FRIENDLY WALK :-). I repeat, NOT STROLLER FRIENDLY. I found this trail by Googling “stroller friendly trails near me.” WRONG. How very, very wrong friends.

I should have turned around like 3 minutes in. But no. I did not. I feel 50% proud of myself for stubbornly pushing my 25 lbs toddler, 50 lbs stroller, and 13 year old beagle over creek beds and up steep, rock-covered grades, and 50% so dumb. Thank you...
