This trailhead on the Appalachian Trail provides great access to the summit of Mount Rogers, the highest point in Virginia. There is a moderate amount of parking, so it might be good to arrive early, but it wasn't crowded when I was there (October 13). There is a convenient vault toilet at the lot, along with two bear-proof trash receptacles. The trail to the summit starts right across the street from the parking lot. Head up the trail and follow the signs to the summit of Mount Rogers. Essentially, from the trailhead you will follow the Appalachian Trail until you reach the Mount Rogers Spur Trail. (There's good signage and a decent number of trail blazes.) The woods are lovely, and the fall colors in October were very nice. There were several places on the trail where downed trees from Hurricane Helene blocked the trail, but hopefully some chainsaw crews can get those cleared before long. I spent about four hours hiking to and from the peak (with some time spent at the top), and I would characterize the trail as just moderately difficult. I found two survey markers on the peak (check the large boulders 🙂). This was a lovely Sunday...
Read moreMy wife and I decided we wanted to take a hike that was not so challenging but more a smooth path so we could look up and enjoy the scenery. This trail head is good for that. What I mean is that a lot of trails are rugged and you have to keep your focus on the trip hazards to avoid stumbling or twisting an ankle. We like to talk and look around at wildlife, leaves and so forth. If you like the same you should enjoy the horse trails found here at Elk Garden Trailhead. If you want a more rugged trail, you may want to steer towards A.T. or Iron Mountain Trail. We are in our fifties and our trail choices have changed a lot in the past ten years. Another trail that we like in the area is the lake loop around Hungry Mother State Park in Marion, VA. Wild grapes and acorns abound here but not much wildlife was seen...
Read moreSmall but nice trailhead… A great little spot to park (this trailhead has decent restrooms also) and hike your choice of two mountain trails. I chose to hike the Appalachian Trail to Mount Rogers. It was a beautiful and amazing experience… A great hike… And there are easy to difficult elements along the way. In shape persons, or experienced hikers should attempt to hike the entire trail. Less experienced hikers can enjoy the trail to the point where the path becomes too narrow and rocky. What surprised me was the great views I enjoyed after being on the trail for only a short time. From this trailhead there’s an immediate ascent with beautiful views in all directions. I really...
