Off the beaten path and tucked on a pleasant hillside farm this spot offers some of the best mead in VA.
TLDR: If you’re an avid mead drinker then you have to make your way here and try it out. Matador, Jolly Dragon, and Voyage are the go to’s. Charcuterie boards are pricey at 55 but if gives you a lot and you keep the board.
Atmosphere: It’s a farm, but the outside sitting area and newly built deck offer a great view. The interior needs some updating as it hasn’t been touched in over 11 years but still nice enough.
Mead: This is why you go here. They make both traditional and fruited mead. The varying flavors have grown over the past decade and they have an offering for everyone’s pallet. I personally enjoy the Matador. A classic honey mead with blood orange.
Wine: They tend to be on the sweet side here. I’m not really a fan of their wines but if you like dessert it’s a good choice they’ll have something for you.
Staff: Most of the staff are great, they check on you from time to time and provide great service. If you’re not in the mood for a lengthy and louder conversation don’t engage with one of the managers there. She’s pleasant and fun, but you will be socially trapped for a minute.
In the end. We went home with over $200 of mead. I regularly visit this place each year to get a supply. I encourage you to do the same when you’re in the area. Stop by flying fox winery for their table...
Read moreI came here after hearing and reading glowing recommendations, I was greatly disappointed due to the poor service and overly sweet wines here. I came here for the lasting tasting, and the wine pourer hastily poured the wines and acted very pretentiously. In fact, she balked when I took pics and posted them on Yelp.
The funny part is that when I checked-in on Yelp, I was given a free gift of a souvenir glass, which she reluctantly gave me. I was curious to try the Watermelon wine (which wasn't on the tasting menu) and she refused to open a bottle of it as it was past 4:30. As I've never seen Watermelon wine before, I shelled out $19 and bought a bottle. It was sickly sweet, much sweeter than the Ice Wines I tried in the Finger Lakes. I threw it out after taking only a few sips.
While I understand berry wines are supposed to be sweet, I was underwhelmed and the rude service left a sour taste in my mouth.
Honestly, why bother to come here when there are so many better wineries in the area - Veritas and Pippin Hill are my favorites.
I recommend also trying the distilleries, Silverback and the VA Distillery Company. They are quite refreshing from...
Read moreFantastic find. If you only stop at one place, stop here! Situated off the main highway, Hill Top stands a part from the other distilleries, wineries, and breweries for multiple reasons aside from the physical. Immediately it is that besides wine, they also offer (and their widest offering) meads. If you are not familiar with the fermented honey beverage, don’t be scared away because neither were we. Each of the meads is made with local ingredients from the property and each has their own unique taste. This brings up the second point: all wines are made from that specific fruit. So if you are drinking a plum wine, instead of a glass of grape liquid with plum flavoring, you are drinking a wine made from plums, all grown on site. The tastes are fuller, authentic, and delicious. Mike, shared the story and unique description behind each drink that we sampled on our flight and the whole Hill Top team was so kind and helpful. Additionally, they sell a one-stop-shop for date night ingredients (cheeses, jams, crackers) to accompany, charcuterie boards, an outdoor seating area, and animals within the vineyard to keep kids...
