The James Monroe birthplace now has a visitor center. The house will be completed within the year. The builders seem to be taking a great deal of care. Monroe's home is being built on its original footprint which was apparently discovered in 2007 by archaeologists with the William and Mary Center for Archaeological Research. There are pathways on the grounds that feature inlaid sections with information regarding POTUS 5. Although the visitor center is somewhat small, it contains artifacts and reproductions along with information about the archaeological discoveries on the property. The docents seem knowledgeable and friendly. The James Monroe birthplace is definitely worth a visit.

Monroe seems to have slipped through the cracks of history. While not a household name like Washington or Jefferson, Monroe was a Founding Father, president and veteran of the Revolutionary War. I visited on a weekday evening despite knowing the visitors center is only open on weekends. The home is still under construction and not open to the public. Take the well constructed path behind the house. Along the way signs highlight Monroe's public and private life. If you are in the area visiting the historic Northern Neck of Virginia I'd make this a stop. I suggest on a weekend when the vistors center is open. If not enjoy the walk I mentioned above and being out in nature.

It's just not a sign on the side of the road. There's a replica of the house. The 5th President of the United States James Monroe was born, a little museum, and an info center. Plus, a nice little park with info tables set around the property. I highly recommend visiting.

I had never been here before and didn't realize how close it was to Stratford Hall. It is free to enjoy on the outside grounds. It was very easy to find close to Colonial Beach VA in the same area where other famous people were born. Its close to George Wasington Birthplace also.

The Visitors Center and actual House now museum was closed due to Covid-19 but the Grounds and park was open. There is plenty of signs and its a very very nice park to check out when visiting the area.

Great to learn history with the kids and walk around the hiking trails!! Beautiful area! Highly recommend...
