We made a pit stop at the lookout as we were driving through Virginia. The reviews said that it was a good place to walk a dog and, it was perfect! Just a short walk to what remained of the fortress, not hard at all, and an interesting story, equally short to the walk. One lookout point required a climb of stairs.
If you are at war, it was a good place to be. A formidable defensive position which was employed with definitive success. It didn't require much explanation as it was obvious why the position was selected. The explanation boards filled in any missing details. As far as historic Civil War sites go, it was one of my favorites.

It's a little small for my taste and I would like a little more hair to walk around in but you know can't have everything but the signage could be updated a little bit it seems faded and worn out so it needs to be replaced comfortable bench to sit on and contemplate the battles that happened there and the men who died and why they died there. Great place to reflect and relax and think about history...

This is the Fort built overlooking the James River that bombarded the USS Monitor and drive it away from Richmond. There is a parking area and a 10 minute walk back to the site.
