Our second place to visit on Walton's Mountain was John & Olivia's Bed & Breakfast which is located directly across the road from the museum. I sat and chatted with owner Carole Johnson for a bit and she is just wonderful. The home was built in 2019 by Carlton Ballowe. What was amazing about the build, there were no blueprints, specifications or dimensions. This house was built by using still grabs from the show to get things right. The grand opening was held in October 2019 and the very first guests to stay were cast members Kami Cotler (Elizabeth), Eric Scott (Ben), Mary McDonough (Erin), Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) and Jon Walmsley (Jason). ||||The main level consists of the kitchen and living room. Off of the living room is the grandparents room featuring a replica of the Whitley House stained glass window as featured in the episode "The House" from season 4. Upstairs the bedrooms feature antiques and period pieces from the 1930's, with the added touch of modern bathrooms. Upstairs you will also see Erin's wedding dress which actually belonged to Mary McDonough's mother. ||||Helpful tips & information: ||||This is a fully functional bed & breakfast. Nightly rates $189 - $249. If you have a large family, you can rent the entire house for $300 - $400 per night, depending on the time of year. ||||Admission: $10.00 per person over the age of 6.||||How does the bed & breakfast work regarding people doing daily tours but are not overnight guests? Most guests don't mind the tours and having people look into their rooms. If an overnight guest wants privacy and to not be apart of the daily tours, they simply close their bedroom door, making their room off limits. ||||To the left of the house is a shed type building (still in progress). Take a little stroll over and go in. There they are housing John Boy's cast iron printing press. ||||There is a ramp for wheelchair access to the main floor. ||||They do allow pictures to be taken inside however they do not allow videos. ||||Hours of operations for tours 10:00am - 5:00pm||Effective 11/01/2022 call for reservations for tours because they might be closed. Saturdays will still be open for tours 10:00am - 5:00pm without reservations. ||||They are a pet friendly site. ||||Cell phone service is spotty.||||Contact information:||Info@thewaltonhamnerhouse.com||434-831-2017 ||||*GPS address:||6483 Rockfish River Road...
Read moreI adore "The Waltons" and thoroughly enjoyed my stay at John and Olivia's bed and breakfast. My husband and I chose to stay there over Thanksgiving last year. The people we encountered were exceptional, and the owner was truly delightful. It's difficult to articulate just how much I treasured this experience; it felt like a home away from home. I discovered that fans of "The Waltons" are affectionately referred to as "Walnuts." I was amazed by how knowledgeable other guests were about the show, recalling episodes and trivia with ease. The bed and breakfast was meticulously crafted to replicate the iconic house from the Hollywood set, while the actual residence of Mr. Earl Hamner, the creator, was conveniently located nearby for tours.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the charming John and Olivia bed and breakfast was only four years old. Given my sensitivity to mold and mildew, I initially harbored concerns about staying in an older property, but those worries quickly dissipated once I experienced the immaculate condition of the accommodations. Each bedroom resembled those featured in the show and boasted its own private bathroom. To my delight, I discovered a TV cleverly concealed behind a quilt in the bedroom, allowing me to fall asleep to my favorite shows.
The following morning, we were treated to a delightful breakfast prepared by the owner, who engaged us in lively conversations about "The Waltons." I cannot overstate how wonderful I felt during my time at that charming retreat. Additionally, we had the opportunity to explore a museum across the road filled with an array of memorabilia from the...
Read moreIf you ever wished you could go back in time and live a simpler life, then John & Olivia's Bed & Breakfast is the place for you. I genuinely felt that the Walton kids would be in the living room when I opened the squeaky screen door and see Grandma and Olivia in the kitchen. Carole, the owner, has done a fantastic job building and decorating her B&B to look very similar to The Waltons house on tv. I stayed in the Writer's Room (John Boy's room) and felt very much at home. The inn is very clean and new and the bathroom was modern. There were dozens of items around the inn that were identical to the ones in the show or very similar to them. The bed was very comfortable and I slept like a kid with the lace curtains gently moving in the evening breeze (Good night, John Boy!). Carole fixed a delicious breakfast of bacon, eggs, English Muffins and scones with coffee and orange juice for breakfast. Then she sat down with me and she told me all about her dream to build this inn. The Earl Hamner house is next door with the Walton's Mountain Museum across the road. There is even a real Drucilla's pond that you can take a short walk to. There is also a small gift shop at the B&B. If you want to relive your Walton's memories, you'll greatly enjoy John & Olivia's Bed...
