My wife & I stayed at Oconee State Park Oct. 28th-31st in a Cabin. For 90% of the stay, we had a wonderful time in the Cabin and walking/viewing the Lake, etc.

However, there were several events that occurred in the Cabin that were disgusting and resulted in a BAD Situation and which I would assume is also occurring throughout the entire Oconee Park Cabin locations.

On the 1st Night: We killed a "huge" Brown Recluse in our bathroom, on the floor near the sink wall. Luckily, I captured it and threw it in the fire.

Next Morning: I noticed a big Fat Worm about 2-3" long of some unknown type on the bathroom floor near the sink area again. Obviously disposed of it.

That afternoon, we went to the Station and told the Ranger attendant guy about our 2 experiences already. He searched and gave us a white Orkin Glue Strip to use and explained that Pest Control occasionally visits the Cabins?? Really?? Apparently not ours!

2nd Night: After placing the Glue Strip in the bathroom near the sink wall, I could not believe that, after hearing my wife scream, I discovered a Mouse partially trapped by the glue trap and only able to barely crawl toward the log wall with its front legs. I cautiously picked-up the glue trap from behind and threw the critter outside, still attached.

3rd Morning: Once again, another type of unknown Big Fat Worm in the bathroom near the sink and about 2" long. Again, disposed of.

I cannot believe that, as nice as the rest of our Cabin #5 was, that there were that many insects & Varmints freely entering the Cabin walls. That was truthfully, DISGUSTING & VERY DISAPPOINTING.

It is apparent that this Oconee State Park Cabin (s??) is managed by Gross Oversight & Negligence by someone.

These four (4) unpleasant events greatly disturbed our stay and left a Very Unpleasant Taste in our Minds due to these occurrences. Imagine how uncomfortable you might be trying to slip into your bed linens at night with this invasion happening!!!

If this State Facility is using any kind of Pest Control Measures, then obviously it is NOT WORKING and someone should be Disciplined or Fired!

We have already filed a Complaint with the Oconee Park Manager several weeks ago and with the SC State Parks but as usual & expected, NO RESPONSE FROM ANYONE! NO ONE!

Obviously, SC Parks and their Park Manager could care less about their customer’s bad experience, or the terrible condition of their specific cabins. All they want is YOUR MONEY $$$ and then...

I used to camp here as a child with my family. Now I get the pleasure of taking my own family. We just stayed 3 nights tent camping. Cons : best to tent camp at the tent sites where it's more sandy and not gravel unless you don't mind gravel pebbles under your tent. You best be a good backer/driver with your bigger RV these sites are kinda tight to maneuver around or even through the park. We seen several struggle. The mini golf, paddle boats, paddle boards, canoes, and Friday night dancing is not included with your stay and is additional cost. There is no easy access to the fishing lake unless you cut through people's campsites. (The park ranger did let us park at un used site near the pier to put our john boat and kayaks in.) There is only a couple hooks in the shower stalls except a bench in the handicap stall. Which if your like me I wear my flops in the shower at bath houses and don't like to drop or put my soaps on the floor. OK now for the pros, the campground itself is really nice! It's a short drive to burrels Ford to go fishing the foothills hiking trail goes through the park. It's close to a dollar general incase you forget something. Nice place to have the kiddos bring their bikes to ride in the park. They have wifi at the office buy barely any signal at your site (which again if your like me you camp to get away from that) there were 3 playgrounds that I seen, a baseball/kickball area, volleyball net at the swimming lake. The sites are nice some have full hook up sewer an all! Only take what wood you will need, my theory had always been whatever I don't use I'll leave for the next this campground will pick up all un used wood. The fishing lake definitely has bass and brim cause that's what we caught. Quiet hrs are a good time 10pm-7am. All In all it was a nice place a little run down from what I remember as a kid/teen. There used to be a nicer swimming lake, the golf stand was open you didn't have to go to the office to get the clubs and balls and didn't have to pay if you were camping. And I so wish the little general store was still open cause back in the day it was a one and done place to stay and didn't even have to leave the park except to fish or site see. We enjoyed our stay if we do go back we will definitely do the real tent sites where they are more secluded and...

We stayed in one of the cabins and it was a great experience! I loved that they were dog friendly, too. If you forgot anything on your trip they have a lot of items in the store and dollar general is only a few minutes down the road which is very convenient for us inexperienced campers.

Even with heavy rains the trails were passable (though we definitely got VERY wet and muddy) and well maintained. Some trees down, but it does warn you not to bring bikes so it wasn't a problem climbing over or around them. There weren't any huge ones blocking the paths or anything. I did wish that some of the offshoot trails had signage to tell us which trails they were a part of or where they would take us (and the distance). The trail around the lake also wasn't marked well and the boardwalks do get slippery in the rain. It is mostly a walk around the lake moreso than a clear trail and obviously the slippery-ness is no fault of the park - I'm just including it in my review as a warning to be prepared for that.

The employees were very friendly and helpful, we just wish the weather were better so we could enjoy the outdoors even more than we did and to play the minigolf - we were unable to due to storms in the forecast.

The cabin itself was amazing! I wish the shower were just a little bigger or had a bathtub for ease with bathing muddy small children. Warning: the beds are small. Full size, not queen. There is a foldout in the couch and a loft we didn't even know about with more beds up top. We didn't need them but it's good to know for the future. Could definitely do a family trip with a couple families easily. The kitchen is very small but there is a fire pit AND grill out back. Also the pans in the kitchen are NOT nonstick so if you plan on making something like pancakes be prepared ;) The fireplace inside was phenomenal and I love that they had firewood to buy directly onsite at the park store.

I think we will definitely be staying here or at another state park again in the near future. Wonderful experience and about the same cost as a hotel room and you get so much more.

There are a lot of cabins but the space between them and foliage is great, we still felt private and secluded.

I only wish we had booked a...

Oconee State Park is a family friendly park with some unique (to SC state parks) things to do. First off the drive to the park is scenic and there are several nice views of the mountains and valleys. The park itself has quite a few nice trails with several connectors to longer trails such as Foothills. You can also take a trail to nearby Oconee Station which is roughly 4 miles on a medium difficulty trail in which you can see a waterfall. The park also has several playgrounds for the kids, a baseball field, volleyball court, and an 18 hole putt putt mini golf which is only $3 per person. It's not Pirates Cove quality but the kids still enjoyed it! We were there over Easter and they had egg hunts for 3 different age groups. There were lots of kids at the Campground and it our kids didn't have any problems finding someone to play with. The rangers were very nice and good with the kids. For the Campground itself, most sites are actually pull through sites. Like most SC parks the sites can be small and somewhat difficult to get in and out. Our site, 10, had a partially washed out drive with a large sharp root exposed that I had to cover in rocks and dirt before we pulled out. Driving thru the Campground is somewhat tight with several tight turns and with sites being small the extra cars were sometimes right on the road making it even more challenging. One downside is that there are very few sites with water access and the public access is a bit of a walk to get too. The bathhouses were numerous, close and clean. The cell service is NON-EXISTANT at this park. Our kids were always asking to go to the ranger station to sit on the porch to access the free Wi-Fi. All in all it was a good weekend and I would good back. Next time I would probably try one of the many cabins there which looked roomy and nice, most around the small lake.
